I have a 99 six speed convertible, no engine mods. I'm looking to change the exhaust system from the stock (with the A&A by-pass pipe). I'm trying to save paying the price of the popular Borla and Corsa kits, but I want something that sounds better and louder than what I've got.
I looking at a custom X-pipe right behind the cats and 18-20" glass packs along the trans. Has anyone tried the glass packs on a C5. Any thought about the sound, performance, etc. An open option is to add two short glass backs in front of the tips if it's too loud.
I like the fact that (1) will be less expensive and (2) different. I'll appreciate any comments on the sound, performance, etc. I can expect.
Exhaust sound is very subjective and almost religious in this forum. :)
All I know is I did not think the sound of a great V8 could be too loud until I did a custom exhaust on this car. I have run a mustang with no mufflers before and it was not this loud.
I was trying to save the big bucks and not spend $1k or better on sound.... so I went and bought some 13" Magnaflow straight thru mufflersthat I put right in front of the tips, I thought they would be like glass packs or so, and they were. MAN O MAN, the vette is a basically a bass tube. All that fiberglass and no insulation... and then, there is an air opening in the rear on the driver's side. The amount of resonance I got, was near deafening. Every one who heard the car from the outside, thought, wow, that sounds great. Gave my sife headaches and she quit wanting to ride in the car. However, we got about 15RWHP out of it.
Needless to say, I have since then, bought a GHL exhaust system. It actually has a deeper tone, but almost no resonance. And I can actually talk on the cell phone in the car.... oh, and I remembered that I can put the windows down and take the top off without my head vibrating and my teeth chattering on their own. :)
Thanks for the advice. Did you get the sport or touring mufflers. Any idea on how they compare to the Corsa Indys. I'd like something louder, but like you said, still be able to have a conversation in the vert., at least with the top up. The wife doesn't know it yet, but the Vararam is next after the exhaust. I have to get the car ready for the caravan to Knoxville.

I have the Corsa Indys. They only get loud when you put your foot in it. Easy to have conversation in vehicle.
I suggest you keep watching the "Parts for Sale" section, maybe eBay, other sites to pick up a used quality system. Great buys come up when guys tire of their systems or just want to make a change. Our Supporting Vendors may have quality systems they have removed to "upgrade" for customers. The vendors would be happy to make you a good deal.
This should be an excellent time to buy a used system because many of the Members are getting ready for the Spring and Summer shows, drives, etc.
