I have a 99 Vette and im doing my clutch on floor jacks.
Well everything is going good im about to drop the crossmember. Wondering do you bring that long tube out with the tranny and diff all in one. What is the easiest and safest way to pull it down?
Yes, it all comes out as one. You will have to lower the assembly to clear the storage compartment behind the diff. There is an illustration on the torque tube showing the possible crush point at the firewall if you go down too far.
There was a post the other day where someone claimed that you can roll the assembly back far enough to change the clutch. This would be easier and safer but I had to remove the diff to replace a seal so I couldn't try it myself.
A few floor jacks worked well for me. I used two to support the trans/diff/tube and one for the eng.

WOW! Man - I rented time on a lift to do mine.
I can't imagine doing it on stands, however, as I put mine in without balancing I'm thinking of trying it on stands. What PEP said makes sense. I can pick up a couple more jacks at WallMart for about $60 each. I don't want to have to pay lift time while I ship the assembly out to be balanced.. It could be up in the air for a week.
Keep in mind that the torque tube / rear sub frame assembly just has to come down and back just enough to clear the input shaft / flywheel by about 9-12 inches.
If you have adequate means to support the rear sub frame you don't have to disconnect the entire sub frame and associated stuff.
