Default FLP header and tuning dyno results

First, I had heads/cam/stock manifolds with MTI tuning. That is the blue line.

Then, I installed FLP headers, put 500 miles on the combo to give it time to adjust, and dyno'd. That is the red line. It had some knock retard due to too much timing in the program, and it also was going rich on the topend.

So, while sitting on the dyno, I dyno tuned it with LS1edit and my laptop, and that is the green line. It took 50 minutes to tune it to that by just editing 2 tables in ls1edit, and was pretty simple (I'd never seen the program until a couple days before I tuned it).

All dyno's were done through the stock Z06 mufflers.

All of my horsepower mods (head/cam/headers/intake manifold/tuning) were self installed, and all but LS1edit were purchased from http://www.ThunderRacing.com. Great folks over there.

Very nice gains.

When you program with LS1Edit on the dyno the PCM resets and all learned data is lost. With that in mind it might be a good idea to dyno your new tune again after PCM learning completes.

Nice curves!!!! I do like the increases the long tubes give these cars. My TPIS showed similar constant gains across the power band as yours did.

When you used LS1 Edit, was one of the adjustments leaning out the fuel? How much did you lean it? I want to go back to the dyno and try to lean mine out just a little more now that the new headers are installed. I have only run it a 100 or so miles and I am sure it is still learning.

The LT’s really give you a true SOTP increase, no doubt!

I like the Z06 exh/FLP/cats sound - its pretty stealthy until you nail it :) Dont be afraid to run the cats if you arent, I gained very little with them off but I honestly didnt tune for them being off since I dont drive the car like that. I also didnt really pick up anything with stingers (except for a lot of noise) so at my HP level the Z06 exhaust is awesome

noticed your "RED" line was with no cats

was the "GREEN" line (with tuning) and no cats as well?

Thanks guys for the comments. I'll try to answer the questions.

First, both header lines are without cats. I do have high flow cats laying around and one day I'll throw them on, retune, and see what the difference is. Right now its just too expensive for me to keep tuning on the dyno every week

Second, flp's plus z06 catback sounds freaking great, I agree. It sounds racey, not loud and obnoxious like most of the headers/offroad/catback cars I've heard. Its all relative I guess.

As for tuning, I edited the PE table all across the rpm range (my ltrims seemed fine before I tuned so hopefully things wont drift too much), and I edited timing for the rows in the timing table that I normally see at WOT. The best power seemed to be had with around 27 degrees at peak torque, then fading up to 28.5 degrees by redline. Each car is different tho.

The final A/F ratio is on this graph here, its the RED line (the blue one shows how i was going rich after putting on headers)

BTW, the writeup for the install should be up by the end of the week, AND, I may get LG headers eventually just to see how they compare back to back against the FLP's...scientific purposes only of course.

So Jon,
First, let me complimnet you on your hard work doing these installs, and the writeup that goes with it. I personally do not like the writeup part my self, so when you do the LG Long Tube install, I plan to use your write up as a set of "installation instructions".
One of my concerns is that the benefit of the LS1edit fixed your tuning deficiencies and added 10rwhp to the test, but should not be attributed to the header increase.

You got 17 rwhp with the FLP header installation. And would you say that you could have gotten 10rwhp out of LS1edit regardless of when you tuned it, either before or after the header install?

I know this is on the edge of "political correctness", but I would say that you would have gotten 10rwhp from LS1edit tuning with or without the headers, and by doing the tuning after the header install, is being slightly misleading.
And in addition, you have it tuned to 13.5 A/F which is a tad on the lean side, without showing the A/F with the stock exhaust.

I am not trying to discredit anything that you say, but I come from a Mathematics and racing background that requires that changes be made on at a time, and when you make 2 changes, the order of the changes should not imply that the first change gets credit for both changes.
The way I see it, if you put my LG Long Tubes on this car, it cannot take advantage of the tuning gain, because that 10hp was already given by default to the FLP headers.
In our race car, if I put a new set of headers on, and then changed the carb, would we attribute the horsepower increase from the carb change to the headers?

Maybe if you remove the headers, and re-dyno it without retuning, you would get a more accurate horsepower number that could be attributed soley to the headers.

Thanks,

Lou Gigliotti
