I have hand ported 'High Flow' cats on my 383. It definately gives a deep sound to the exhaust and it picks up a few ponies.

On a big cubed motor you WILL notice a difference in power and sound. The only downside in my opinion is the smell but I just deal with with it cause I just love the sound. You won't hurt anything by doing it except for a few treehuggers. Gut those suckers!

If you want Off-road setup, I wouldn’t bother gutting cats, but put an off road X-pipe (not straight pipes), right behind the headers (where the cats are)

I bet straight pipes would make more power than gutted cats and
X-pipe will make even more power than straight pipes…

As a bonus you save your cats which you can always use to pass emissions, etc.

P.S. All codes could be taken care of by LS1Edit :yesnod:

Straight pipes will flow better than gutted cats due to the fact that a gutted cat causes turbulance. The larger the motor, or for forced induction, the less restrictive the exhuast, the better. On a stock cube motor with minor bolt ons, replacing the stock cats with high flow cats would be fine. That way you make more horsepower, and still can hug trees!!!

As far as codes, you will need o2 simulators or if your car was tuned with LS1 Edit I think they can delete the o2 sensors with it.

Go with an off-road X-Pipe right behind the headers for the most gain on a big cubed motor

you can always buy a main cat-free "H" pipe (X pipe) and swap out the factory one.
That way you can always convert back if needed. The factory "H" pipe is expensive; and this is due to it containing the main cats which are the bulk of the cost. But an aftermarket setup -sans cats- shouldn't "theoritically" be all that expensive. :skep:

As far as gutted cats vs. straight pipes I’d say that smell and loudness would the same with both.
Like I previously said, straight pipes would most likely make a bit more power than gutted cats, but either should make more power over full cats.

I got ~20wrHP with straight pipes over high flow cats (even more gain later on with X-pipe over straight pipes) (do a search - you’ll find the graphs I posted)

I already have an x-pipe but it is behind the CATS.
For best results you may wanna consider redoing your exhaust to have an X-pipe right behind the headers.
Maybe something to think about in the future.
You could try that 3” Stainless Works exhaust. :)

Good luck!

Is the way I have it (the x-pipe after the CATS) hurting anything? i.e. performance, tq, anything????
I wouldn’t say “it hurts performance”, it’s just that you may be leaving some power on the table, that’s all….
Keep in mind - every car is different too, so there’s no way to know for sure :nono: how much you gain/if you gain something w/o actually doing it…

Don't gut em. They will cause turbulence...I gutted mine!! I am looking to have straight pipes welded in..Or go to a high flow cat. I hate the smell!!!!!!

Shouldn't that be "I love the smell of a catless exhaust in the morning"

I'm getting ready to make on "off road" pipe and eliminate the cats. I've got an intermiediate pipe with cats and an X pipe for street/emmisions testing but for the track I'm going to make a middle section without the cats.

Here's my question: can I weld in the X section to the front of the stock H pipe that will bolt to my cat-back. the stock H pipe was left over when I put on the Magna-Flow X pipe.

cutting the stock H pipe out will cause me to have to set up a jig to make sure the pipes are in the correct position (so the tail pipes are even) before I weld in the X pipe section.

If I could leave in the stock H pipe, I could insure the pieces would align properly. I would just have to add the X section to the stock pipe left overs and then enough straight pipe to fit into the headers.
