Default abs active after new pad install

I just changed my pads and installed SS brake lines.

I was doing the pad breakin and every time I put what used to be mild pressure on the brakes it would quickly decel (good thing) but ABS would light up. I am braking hard, but not slamming my foot down.

Does ABS activate more after a pad change because it doesn't take as much pedal to really engage the brakes?

Just wondering if this sounds normal.

Donald, hi,

Just wondering : does your Car shows such behaviour with new aftermarket Pads, if yes : which ones, or are you using new GM OEM stockers ?

Some folks on the forum have noted they encountered an ABS error code after installing the SS brake lines. I installed the Goodgridge brand and have never had a problem - and I autocross. Perhaps you are having one of those problems. As I recall, most had to remove and replace with a different brand.

Good luck.

Good point.

I used teh stock caliper / banjo bolts not the ones that came with the lines. The reason was the ones that came with the lines were really short compared to the other ones and when I was torqueing the bolts, I pulled the threads out of the first 5 threads on the rear caliper. Maybe that is my problem, but the bolts that came with the lines were terribly short.

I think you are only having the light because the pads are "bedding" in. You are using more pressure than you normaly would in street driving. Also, the ABS is very sensitive, and comes on more often than you might realize.

If you were having a problem, whether SS related or not, the ABS system would Shut Down completely, and you would get a Warning light. ABS active is a good thing.

Thanks for the reply. It is only if I get on the brakes a bit. Definitely not if i'm just rolling up to the stop light and provide consistent force. I'll give them a week or so to break in.

They are just the Dana pads made for GM. They come in an ACDelco box and everything. They are supposed to be slightly more aggressive.
