I have an automatic 1997 coupe with 72,000 miles and recently I’ve noticed some hesitation around 1000 RPMS and the RPMs fluctuate at idle. From idle if I give it a little gas it hesitates and then bucks.
I just want to have some sort of idea before I drop it off at the service department. Here’s a video, but sometimes after I come to a stop the RPMs fluctuate even more…
Could be (1)fuel filter(2)plugs(3)plug wires(4)dirty injectors(5)dirty air filter or MAF sensor going bad.Any of these can cause the problem you describe.I could not get the link to work, but most logical guess is the fuel filter..
Since you didn't mention any problems during normal driving conditions, I assume the problem is only at idle or just above.
Lost did mention a couple good points but I would exclude the fuel and air filter. Problems with one of these components would show first under high load conditions at or around torque peak. (4000 - 4500 rpm)
1) I would check for anyair leaks between the MAF and the throttle body.
2) If you still have the AC Delco stock sparkplugs installed, I would have a look at those first. They are nototious for loosing the pucks which leave you with a spark gap which is too large.
3) You didn't mention if the problem occurs only when engine is hot. If it happens only when hot, remove the MAF and clean the heated MAF wires. Be careful, those wires are very sensitive. I would use a good carb cleaner spray.
I had a similar problem at one time. It turned out to be a loose connection on the air bridge connected to the MAF. Have you changed out the air filter recently? I see your in Austin!!
Check out the southwest events forum. Summer is coming and there will be a whole lotta shows and events coming up!!
Thanks guys, I think I may have found the problem, haven't taken it on a test drive yet.
I had to get a new pulley and belt last week, so the service department may not have tightened everything. Would they have taken the air bridge off to do the work? In the picture (where the arrow is pointing) is where I found a loose connection, do you think that would have been the problem...is that the MAF?
