I hope somebody can help me with this one, I believe I have seen some posts in here before on this subject. I blew the engine in my car last August due to shifting from 3rd back into 2nd by mistake at high RPM's. The dealer went through the engine completely and put me back on the road but about 1000 miles later driving to work one morning I smelled oil! I took the car to my mechanic at work and found oil pouring out the front of the engine, the dealer came and picked the car up. The balancer had come loose and knocked the front seal out of my car, this was in September I put the car away for the winter shortly there after. I drove the car to work last week and heard a kind of squeaking noise, guess what it's loose again. I pulled the file on my car and have only put 725 miles on it since the last repair. So why is this thing coming loose and after it came loose the first time is it possible that it damaged the balancer or worse yet the end of the crank? If anybody as any info on this it would be much appreciated. Thanks, Bob
Sounds like the dealer did not follow the GM procedure for proper torquing of the harmonic balancer bolt. Done correctly, I see no reason for any issues.
As for damage, ask them to check the dimensions of the harmonic ID and the crank snout OD. Check these against the specs and if in tolerance, OK.
Had mine replaced last year and they used high temp loctite. I'm pretty sure the bolt was torqued beyond spec because of engine hp/tq. So far, so good.
I agree with them. I just got my c5 back from the dealer this week due to the cranky pulley wobbling. I made sure they torqued it down properly to spec using one bolt. removing it, and using a second new bolt to even higher torque spec. I have the paper work if you need it. It almost sounds like they may have ruined your threading. I would check ... have them remove it and inspect for yourself. If thread is bad, time for those jackasses to rebuild your entire bottom end with new crank shaft. GM sucks butt when it comes to service!
