Default question, 5.7 liter??

I am boring out my heads, does that mean that my car is no longer a 5.7 liter? I have no idea, just curious.

I have no clue, I admit it. That is why I ask. I plead blond on this topic.

Bore*Bore*stroke*pi/4*cylinders == Displacement.

Nothing you do to the heads bothers this equation.

but, if you increase the size of the dome in the clyinder head, you decrease your compression ratio.

No, you have to increase the bore and stroke of the pistons to increase your displacement I believe.

Changing your head volumes will obviously change your compression ratio but displacement is measure on swept volume, as someone up there said, bore X stroke = displacement. Put little itty bitty heads (combustion chamber volumes) on and you will have a high compression 5.7L. Put mammoth huge heads on and you will have a low compression, low performance, but able to run low octane fuel, 5.7L.

Another stupid question...
I thought the displacement was lowered alittle with the LS1 to 5.6 and some change? Kinda like a 5.0 mustang is really a 4.9 and some change :p:
Then again I could be way off my rocker :yesnod:

Quick math:

LS1 Bore=3.90", Stroke=3.62". Since we're taking metrics here, let's covert units early, that is, 25.4mm per inch (exactly, if I recall). So, Bore=99.06mm and Stroke=91.948mm.

By definition, volume of a cylinder (the effective displacemment caused by the motion of the piston) equals the area of the bore circle (Pi times radius squared) times the length of the stroke.

Therefore, the displacement of one cylinder equals
3.14159X(99.06/2)squared X 91.948 which equals approximately 708644 cubic millimeters. Multiplied by eight equals 5,669,156 cubic millimeters, the displacemenmt of our LS1/6.

There are ten millimetrs per centimeter. Ten millimeters cubed (volume conversion) equals one thousand. Therefore, division reveals that the displcement is actaully 5,669 cubic centimeters. Again, by definition, there are 1000 cubic centimeters per liter so again division shows that the displacemnet of the LS1 is 5.669 liters. Rounding to the nearest decimal shows that it is a 5.7, but as you surmised, not quite.

Sorry, I'm just a frustrated BSME trying to exercise long lost math skills. Too much time on my hands on another sleepless night.

:crazy: :crazy: :crazy: :crazy: Oh my that is way to much math for this college grad. I thought I left Cal a long time ago. Please let this thread die...LOL I hate seeing it come up to the top reminding me about my dumb question...LOL Thanks for the technical info though. Now I can sound semi smart if someone asks.
