I just got done modifying my MAF sensor, MAF sensor housing, and the stock air box. If you take out your MAF sensor you will see that those two aluminum-housing brackets have a piece of aluminum that runs top to bottom that split the air flow. I put the aluminum housings on a lathe. When I got done I removed the aluminum piece and the screen also making the housing bigger in diameter. I also cut the plastic on the MAF sensor to make it look like an aftermarket one. The MAF sensor had the same shape as the housing with a plastic piece running top to bottom. I also cut one big square hole in the front of the air box right in front of the air filter to allow better airflow. K&N make this same piece and ask 170.00 for it. It only took me 10 minutes to make it, what a ripoff. I know a few people have had idling problems when they take out that aluminum piece, but my car is running great and if you put your hand 3” away from the air filter now you can feel the air being pulled around your hand into the filter. With the stock the air box it had to pull air in thought those four 1” diameter tubes on the side of the box. I don’t know if I made any hp gains but I know I’m getting better airflow. Let me know what you think, Thanks Nate
Re: Modified my MAF sensor and air box (extremecorvette)
This is exactly my next mod....how did you cut the air box...I assume you removed it...that's where I'm finding difficulty, what did you use to cut the box? Looking forward to hearing from you
You can call me and I can tell you step by step how to do this. Cell 515-231-7828 but try first my home 563-264-1706 ask for Nathan. The factory air box is just held on by two push in studs that are welded on the frame. Take the air bridge out and then with the hood up stand in front of the car and push on the air box towards the engine. You have to reach between the hood and the front bumper to do this. There are two studs that the box is pushed onto, one on each side. Once you have the air box out you can just take a drill and make four holes in the corners of the box you want to cut out. Then I took a skill saw and cut it out. Take some sand paper and sand the edges to smooth them out. It’s really easy.
Re: Modified my MAF sensor and air box (extremecorvette)
Try this: instead of cutting your air cover remove it completely. Then drill four holes through the edges of the filter and through the bottom of the housing. Using wire ties or similar through the holes fix the filter in place. Now you have nothing covering the filter and no restriction.
I thought about that my self but for looks this looks the best, and most inportand the two holes that the air box has to mount it self to the frame are in the cover so you really can’t just remove it. I cut a square shaped hole in the cover that was about 8x12” I don’t think you would get that much more air buy just taking the cover off. But everything is worth a try.
Re: Modified my MAF sensor and air box (extremecorvette)
The lip of the bottom half of the cover fits snuggly under the retaining pins and holds the air box in place. Personally I like the look of the exposed K&N.
