My coolant temp shot up to 260* this morning. This was after about 22 miles of highway driving. I pulled into a parking lot. I did not see any leaking fluid anywhere. The reservoir has coolant in it (full at a hot temp). I let the car idle for a few minutes and the temp drops like a rock to 220* and stays there (oil temp is around 217). If I try to drive it at all, the temp shoots straight back up.
I did race the car the last Saturday some NA and nitrous runs (ran some 10.90's @ 135). I did drive home (after racing) 40+ miles with no problems.
The car is not misfiring, no leaking fluid, the fans are on, ... What else do I need to look for?
Is the coolant circulating? If not your pump may be bad... do you have a large plastic bag stuck in front of your radiator? That can cause those problems too... A bad radiator cap (on the tank) will allow high temps too... my bet is that you have a plastic bag in front of the rad....
When I had overheating problems I saw one of the fans turning slower than the other. I found a plastic Piggly Wiggly shopping bag wrapped around the fan moter. The C5 underhood is like a moving vacuum cleaner.
Well, I had it towed to a shop. The guy said he tested the coolant for hydro-carbons, and that the test was positive? So, that means I have an internal problem like a blown head gasket.
Do I have room to pull my heads with the motor in the car if I have head studs? The motor was out when the heads were put on.
The engine stays in the car when the heads come off... no need to worry about extra cost there... I hope whatever is wrong with your car it is fixed very soon. :smash:
