Default 4spd Auto Question

This is so basic I'm almost too embarrassed to ask, but there is only a reference to see the dealer for a check on Trans Fluid(Dexron III).
Is it that complex, or do I really need to "check it in" for a day or two just to make sure? I'm about ready to climb under the car & figure it out.
Anyone know of a reference to this?
If so...Thanks a lot!

Fromwhat I've read, unlike most cars there is no dipstick to check fluid level on a C5. Rather it is checked by a fill plug hole on the side of the tranny. Similar to some manuals and rear ends, the tranny fluid level should be just below the plug hole. Take out the plug, stick in a finger, if you feel the fluid, the level should be ok. This is probably too much to ask of the usual consumer, hence, the bring it in advice. If you are comfortable under your car and have some common car knowledge, this is not too hard a procedure.

Bear in mind that the engine needs to be running to check the fluid. This makes the checking process a little more difficult, especially without a lift. Per GM, if it hasn't leaked, you don't need to check the fluid level. I assume this is because there is nowhere else for it to go (such as out through a vacuum modulator on an older non-electronic-controlled transmission).
