Default Questions, post Blackwing install

Well, its 5am again, and I just finished the blackwing install! The work went fine save for the 30 minutes it took me to find the MAF little plastic "key" that I dropped into the engine compartment.

Now, keep in mind I may be paying alot more attention to the engine now that I am working on this vehicle myself:

It seems the engine is idling a bit poorly. Every few seconds the rpm drops 50 rpms or so and the engine rumble kinda hesitates. Also, it seems to be idling a bit low, but mabey I am just ignorant. Idle is averaging around 750 and dropping around 700 every few seconds. This is what I noticed after I took her out for a spin after the install. Pertinent info: 13,500 miles, second owner, no maintinence that I know of save for oil changes.

Otherwise, its great. I think I can feel less hesitation in the initial stages of acceleration and I definatly can feel it after the initial stage. It also sounds smoother in acceleration, less of that gurgling noise that used to come from the engine compartment. Also idle seems to be a bit more robust in the sound. Am I imagining all this??

Also, the lowering I did last night finally seems to be settling into the ride and appearance. Looks killer, and rides tighter. This too I could be imagining, however there is definaly less room to stick fingers in between the fender and the tire.

Any input on the idle? Thanks guys.

I just did my Blackwing about 3 weeks ago now. Just after I did it and drove into work, I logged onto the Forum and saw a posting about idle relearn after the Blackwing install. I never would have thought about that. The post said you basically have 2 options. You can do the idle relearn technique immediately, or just drive and the idle "relearns" itself after about 50 to 100 miles. I, by default, took the second option. I don't remember anything odd about the idle, but I may have just missed it.

You are not imagining about the decrease in hesitation on acceleration. I noticed that right away. I can comment on the different exhaust tone somewhat since I also installed my PRT's right about the same time!!! :D I ended up putting the PRT's on about a week before I got to the Blackwing and power duct. After I put them on, I noticed a mellowing of the tone with a slighly more throaty tone to it.

Talk about aggravation losing that little MAF piece, try putting on the cold air screens!!! I followed the tech tips from the Forum, and they worked. It just took awhile.

With the roads I drive on and the speed bumps at work that I have to go over, I'm not going to do the lowering. I have to admit it does look cool!

Working on your own car as much as you realistically can will definitely develop pride in ownership!!!

That's a fact!
It's kinda like the difference between having a great set of natural ***** (women of course) and laying out 4-5 grand to have the doc do the job.
Where's the real pride??? :lolg:
With the exception of warranty work, if I don't do it, it won't get done.
That's just a personal thing, but I'm lucky enough to be an O.K. mech and have the tools & facilities.

I broke my lil plastic maf key when i installed my blackwing, Is it a cheap part to get? I've been running without it for the past year with no problems, but if its a cheap part I might as well get a new one. Also any part numbers?

I did mine over a year ago and let the relearn take care of itself also. The only thing that perplexed me was that I had a gas milage drop of 1 1/2 to 2 mpg for about 3000miles. After that my average jumped back up to where it had been befofe the blackwing install. I posted this and a few other members noticed the same thing. I did notice a big difference in throttle responce and am more than happy with it. A good mod for the cost.

Cruises, its the widget that locks the mass air flow sensor into place. You have to remove this little grey key to get the MAF out. Check this out:

Thanks GLF!!

Here's a pic from when I did my install recently:

It's the part between the black plastic, just push in on it with a screwdriver and remove it carefully.
