I just got off the phone with Mitch @ FLP a little while ago. I installed a set of FLPs that I've had lying around since December, and after a week and a half of driving I heard a ticking sound underneath the car yesterday morning. I brought the car down to my shop, and put it up on the lift. Upon disassembly, I found that the driver's side tab that bolts on to the bottom of the torque tube near the collector had completely pulled off, leaving a hole in the header. Before disassembly I had seen some black soot around the area, but as soon as I removed the bolt the piece completely fell off. I explained the situation to Mitch, and he stated that he had none in stock right now. So I have to send back my setup, and wait for the new ones to arrive. I applaud him for making the effort, but I wish I would have had these on for the next Corvette Challenge event this weekend. Kinda sucks that I had to install them, uninstall them and reinstall my stock parts but at least FLP is going to remedy the siuation. I was looking forward to my dyno results with these, but I guess it will have to wait a few weeks until I get my new set.
How loud was your ticking noise? I have TPIS and I am thinking I have some exhaust leak - my ticking is not very noticeable and it may be coming from the engine vs. a leak.
Sorry to hear about this........
I looked at this area before I installed mine. Some folks may have thought this was not important.....I guess it is now.........From my Webpage:
Collector tab weld penetration looks good on the inside.......
Collector tab weld penetration looks good on the outside.......
I have seen QA issues like this in the past....been there...........
What is the down side of not fastening those tabs????
Without fastening the tabs you will subject the header to more vibration and make it more prone to damage. There is such a large mass supported by the flange alone that these tabs are required in order to distribute the load more evenly and remove some of the stress from the flange area
Artie tough break. I hear it is quite a bit of work to install headers.
It wasn't that bad, especially since I have the shop to work at. The next time I install these, I want it to be the LAST time I do this job though :yesnod: I got the FLP setup for ease of installation, if I had a clue that this would happen I would have installed TPIS like I've done for a few people already.
So i guess breaking is not what they are supposed to do. FLP headers are flat out garbage and everyone who has them should ask for a refund. I will post more on my story and FLPs lack of customer service later. You will want to stay tuned for this. The poopie will hit the fan.

Check your A.I.R. system attachment points if you suspect a leak from the header causing this noise. The TPIS units are known to have cracks develop in this area, particularly the earlier units. The noise would make itself more prevalent under acceleration with moderate to heavy load on my car, if you are having a bad ticking sound at all RPMs I would check your rocker arms for failed needle bearings (fairly common LS1/6 issue). Good luck

It looks like the weld may have been a little too "hot", and burned through on the supporting metal on the interior of the collector. The flange pictured above completely came off in the exact shape of the weld, leaving a decent sized hole in its wake. I think their welding guy needs to back down the settings a little on the MIG welder

Joe, I'd love to hear your story about the FLPs. Is this a common issue with these units? Or did you have different issues?
