The K & N oil I was told by K & N is nothing more than transmission oil. If the unit is over oiled it can spray residue through the MAF when engine is running leaving a film on the sensors. GM Tech support also confirmed this. When I had the problem I cleaned the sensors with an electronic parts cleaner I got at autozone. Fixed it right up. Fuel mix goes lean bigtime. The Donaldson as per disscusion with them in Minn confirmed this situation. They indicated that they don't have that problem because of the material they use for the oiling process doesn't adhere to the sensors.
FYI, Jim.
K&N air filter oil is a compound of mineral oil blended with special polymers to form a very efficient tack barrier. Red dye is added to show just where you have applied the oil. Eventually the red color will fade but the oil will remain and filter the air. IT IS NOT TRANSMISSION FLUID.
We continually beat this dead horse on this forum, but since I'm here I'll once again add my $0.02.
The Blackwing mounts directly to the factory filter housing mounting pins and looks like it belongs there. My opinion is that every other option you have requires cutting or in some other way looks "tacked on".
No available intake offer lower restriction. Cool or Ram air benefits from Vararam/Breathless/etc are highly promoted but difficult to prove.
I went with the Donaldson Blackwing. Mounts like stock, fits great, excellent quality and appearance at a great price at the time I bought it. Donaldson also makes a panel filter like the K&N. They offer a combo with their panel filter and a '02+ Z06 lid for around $110, probably just as good as the Blackwing. Get a performance hoodseal too. Check out their website. :yesnod:
K&N oil is NOT transmission fluid. It's some sort of mineral oil compound dyed red. I've been using them on several different cars for over 10 years. They work great and expell no residue when new. If you over-oil it after a cleaning I imagine some oil might get through. Don't over oil it. I use a K&N and opened up my stock box with a Dremel. Also, opened up the fog light shrouds with the Dremel to allow cool air into the air cleaner compartment and added a hood seal. Let's see, that was $75 total.
The dealer will also tell you the C5 comes with a magentic drain plug. Thanks to folks on this forum, I bought a magnetic drain plug from a local dealer before my first oil change. The parts guy insisted I already had a magnetic drain plug. I changed the oil the next day and installed the new plug. Stock plug removed was NOT magnetic. The dealers seem uninformed about quite a few things.
After in-depht type-evaluation I went with the pretty and genial setup from MTI / HOUSTON. YES, I know (wondering), their intake filter-system is NOT so popular.........go asking why ? I at least do not know the correct answer.
Either way, I was not seeking and searching for the so-called "Best Bang for the Buck" neither. But I was interested to have a clever and ingenious setup which might best respond to an aerodynamically concept with reduced inner turbulences (coming from a round shaped filter-type). With their setup you have a square large low seating intake shroud, just underneath the front bumper, BUT a high seating large High Performance panel filter (K&N #33-2118). The ever mentioned chances/dangers of water intrusion issue is put almost to zero (anyway : one should beware from extremely deep puddles, but normal heavy rain is a no-worry - just apply common sense).
Delivery contains all the necessary hardware-items PLUS a pre-installed/cutted new GM OEM-Shroud as well. ZERO modification of what-so-ever is necessary. So the installation of the entire system is a real snap and might represent a very nice weekend project..........I say weekend, because you would not like to stop driving around the entire weekend, due to the pleasure to have this system on your street machine. :steering: :)
Now, and to finish this up, I just wanted to confirm that all the LS1 asthma-symptoms intake-side have gone for ever.............seems engine intake breathing could only be further enhanced by a nice set of p/p Cylinderheads and Camshaft and related !! :smash:
Conclusion : I am, from own driving and DynoJet-experience, very happy with MTI's intake-solution - intake-sound appears nice also. Talk to Jayson at MTI/HOUSTON, and I am sure, he will guide you through !! Enjoy !!
After a long research, and your advice, I've decided to go with the Blackwing. I've ordered it from Exit28motorsports  . Installed it last Friday and I am very with my first mod :D . Thanks to everyone in the Forum :seeya
I have an 02 that i purchase with 1500 miles on it, and i did a lot of investigation, it seems the blackwing is very popular, so i purchased one, and it took me about 1/2 hour to install it. it was not hard to do, i did get instruction advice form searchin 'donaldson blackwing installation', and that helped, I paid 205 dollars from exit 28 motorsports with free shipping, a more economical way may be to modify your existing cover and just buy a k&m airfilter. the gain in horse power may be very similar... so they say, I like the quality and the look of the donaldson, it certainly is a good item. and it is a good improvement, good luck.
