Hello Vette buddies. I am happy to be a new member ;) Anyway, Im on the market looking to buy an Air Filter for my baby. This would be it's first mod. Can you guys advice me, which one should I get? I am looking for more rwhp. I heard that Donaldson Blackwing is pretty good. Please, help.
Welcome to the forum!
As a first mod, the Blackwing is cheap, easy to install and definitely gives the C5 a kick in the pants. Do a search on the different air filtering systems and you'll get a boat load of information.
I asked what would be the best Mod for the money when I first bought my Vette and the majority of the people on the forum told me the Blackwing was the way to go. I'm very happy with it.
A couple of diff ways to go here... you can buy a re-usable K&N filter for $50 and then cut a hole in your existing cover (or buy one from LPE for $15) and pick up 10 RWHP. Or you can buy a Vortex for $250 (cut a hole in your shroud) and pick up 15 RWHP. Or you can buy a Blackwing for $250 and pick up 15 RWHP... If I was going to do it all over again and only do the Airbox, I would get the K&N and cut the OEM box.

Hmmm.... call me frugal, but 200+ bucks for a blackwing or a vortex?? Not for me, I got a K&N air filter for my vette. I have K&N's in all my cars and they have been solid performers.
Last but not least, I have a dremel, so I just cut the stock airbox and instant open breathing for $59.00 total (that was for my K&N and shipped to my house)!!

had a blackwing (first mod) switched to a T1... hmmmm dont know if i would have gone with the vortex but might try it one day, heard good things about it. cant go wrong w/ the blackwing and if you ever want to switch sell it!
Been with the Halltech. Make sure it's the sidewinder so no water problems. My Y2K got 23.4rwhp and the 02 it picked up 16rwhp. BE CARFULL of the K&N when reoiling, contaminates the MAF sensors if over oiled, been there done that. The Donaldson doesn't bother because it's a synthetic oil vs K&N's transmission oil method.
What do you mean by your post? How does over oiling on K&N affect MAF sensor but over oiling blackwing does not affect the MAF??? What happened to your MAF. Please explain confirm!
The K & N oil I was told by K & N is nothing more than transmission oil. If the unit is over oiled it can spray residue through the MAF when engine is running leaving a film on the sensors. GM Tech support also confirmed this. When I had the problem I cleaned the sensors with an electronic parts cleaner I got at autozone. Fixed it right up. Fuel mix goes lean bigtime. The Donaldson as per disscusion with them in Minn confirmed this situation. They indicated that they don't have that problem because of the material they use for the oiling process doesn't adhere to the sensors.
You will probably get votes for all kinds of intake changes. Personally I went for the Halltech T1C Sidewinder. I liked it because it changed everything from the filter to the throttle body except the MAF sensor. I don't know the actual horsepower increase but SOTP dyno said it worked.
