I have a 2003 spiral grey automatic and owned a '94 a few years back. For the '94 you could buy muffler eliminators. Essentially they were straight pipes that bolted on in place of the mufflers. I'm looking for something similar for my '03. I have seen the SLP loudmouth and the muffler bypass trick. Does anyone make something similar to the Allens straight pipes that are available for the C4? I'd like just regular 'ole pipes that bolt on, nothing fancy like polished stainless..just some pipes...
any help is appreciated...
P.S...my buddy is looking for a Miami mechanic to re-seal the intake on his '94...any recommendations?
I would like the same thing, but the closest I've found is cutouts. I've seen at least 1 member on this board with straight pipes instead of mufflers. I don't see why you can't just go to a muffler shop and have them bolt up straight pipes to the flanges.
If you like the big Borla XR-1 tips you can find the tailpipes without the center resonator and they'll bolt up in place of the stock mufflers. I ran this for about 6 months before I got sick of it, it was just too loud for me.
I still have mine in a box in the garage if you're interested. Easy to install, easy to remove.
I ran straight pipes for about 1 week. When the engine would reach rpms over 2500, it was just too loud. Seriously, I could not hear myself talk in my loudest voice. The Borla XR-1 with the resonitor section is just right; nice rumble at idle, part throttle nice a throaty, and roar like a dragon at WOT :D
I'm working on making a 3" fully headers back stainless exhaust set up like the Borla XR-1 but with a X pipe in front of the resonator and using sound deadening in the resonator to get ride of a few dB's.
djstylz: the problem with a muffler shop is they are going to bend the pipes without a mandrel bender. When they make the curves to go over the axle the will flatten out which is going to reduce flow...
66impala: thats what I'm looking for. The pipes only. It took me awhile but i foundd a pic of them and thats the ticket. I'll E-mail you.
I want strictly bolt-on..that way if I'm going to make a road trip the swap back to stock will be easy...
My bro has a '98 z28 with a cutout in the I pipe. The exhaust basically dumps right below the cabin area so I don't see how much louder a vette is with straight pipes? Someone correct me if I'm wrong but his exhaust isn't that loud and actually draws alot of compliments.
I ran almost straight pipes with some little Magnaflow Race mufflers. They were basically straight pipes. It did get quite a bit of resonance, but produced a noticable bit of extra acceleration at the top end of every gear. I have since bought a GHL package for the old girl, but it doesn't have the same "raped-ape" pull to the red line.
however, the wife is happy and she will drive it now, so.. such is life for me.
