I figured that title would get some attention. I installed a GHL exhaust on my stock '98 a4 last week. The overall volume of this system is fine (although a little louder wouldn't bother me), but I'm not really pleased with the tone. It doesnt seem very deep to me at all. It does have a motor boat sound to it, especailly at low speeds/rpms and idle. When reving it in park, it sounds OK. I'm new to vettes....maybe this is normal, but my old '98 V6 Camaro had more of a deep rumble with a Spintech catback than this. This really surprises me since I've never read a single negative comment about this setup. Will a magnaflow xpipe make THAT big of a difference? Also, will one of these 12" $100 xpipes sound just as good? PLEASE HELP!!!
An X-pipe is just what you need to turn the volume down a bit, which sounds near your limit. The X-pipe will also give you a slightly lower note as well, which you like. More importantly, the snap, crackle, and pop on deceleration will stop.
I'm waiting to install Z06 Titanium mufflers on my 03. I chose the Magnaflow X-pipe and it did stop the motor boat sound, many have complained about. It's a little cleaner install to buy an X-pipe because you only have to cut the pipe once. You already have a substantial investment in your system, why not get it done right?
Let us know how it sounds with the X-pipe.
Unike alot of people here, I havent noticed ANY popping durring deceleration. I'm only looking for something quite a bit deeper. Anyone with experience with going from GHL w/o xpipe, and then adding one? What changed?

if you read his post again, it sounds to me like he would like it to be a bit louder, and definitely deeper and more aggressive. SLP Loudmouth or Borla XR1 is the answer.

Re: GHL dissapointment? (Majestic43)
An X pipe will only make the car quieter (is that even a word?). The motor boat sound is standard fair with most exhausts on C5s. I have hear some cars where they have taken the crosspipe out and made true dual exhaust, and it did get rid of most of the motorboat sound. I think they lost some horsepower. The Magnaflow and Flowmaster cat backs don't seem to have any of the motorboat sound, but they are both about the same in loudness as the GHLs.
Guess I'll save up for an x-pipe now  . Hopefully I'll be happier. I'll probably want/need one sometime down the road anyway. In the mean time, maybe I'll find a few vettes owners willing to let me listen to their cars next month at Super Chevy in Ennis, Tx. Thanks so much for all the help! :seeya
