Default Lowering Bolts - Specs?

I keep hearing about using the longer bolts for Z51 / zo6 vette's.

What are the specs for those? I know they should be 6", grade 5-8. fine thread, but what is the size???

?

Thanks

John

If you can find them they should be 9/16". I would say 80+% of fForum members who use longer bolts are using 1/2" bolts with no ill effects.

I'll assume most are not using the stock nut, i was under the impression you had to use the stock nut for locking reasons?

My bad.

You should use metric bolts. The 1/2" will damage the rubber dampers in time-too much play.

Of you buy US, don't use grade 8. Grade 8 is designed for a pure clamping load, no cyclical. Use Grade 5, imho.

Once again, I will disagree with this statement, unless you are racing your car full time, the bushings will be fine. Having a 4 post lift I check under my car all the time, the bushings are in perfect shape. I have almost 20,000 KMS on the 1/2" lowering bolts. I do agree with the grade 5 bolts though. :yesnod:

ok, so i go to my local hardware shop - they only ones that would carry such a grade and size...

They only had 1/2" in 6" at grade 5. The only issue is: it is not fine thread.. Can i just use lock tite or something? what is the "importance" with the fine thread?

They did not have anything else, i looked - metric - everything...

John,
You have 6" bolts in there now (stock). However the stock ones are only threaded to 5 1/2". Therefore you are only gaining 1/2". This may be what you are after. Seems like most folks are using 6 1/2" bolts or even 7".
I do not know if there is anything to worry about with the course thread. You can buy nylon nuts, sometimes called nylocks, that will retain the nuts on the bolts very well.

I used 7", it let me get the exact height I wanted. With 7" you can go as low as you want or crank the nuts up and go 4x4   After you get your desired height, get a wheel alignment. (After you put some settling miles on it first.)
