I was getting the message in the DIC about tire sensors, so I decided to retrain them. The display was reading ok for both front and left rear, but right rear was either blank or xxx. I followed the instructions regarding training the sensors. At each corner, after a couple of seconds with the magnet, I got a "beep" telling me that that sensor was trained. After the 4 beeps (one at each corner), I went to check the DIC, and while the fronts were still ok, the rear had swapped. Now the xxx was on the left rear. So I tried training them again. No change. Each time I tried retraining the sensors, I got the appropriate honks on the horn, but the problem remains. Anyone else ever experience this? It sure has me puzzled. Oh, and the car is a 97. Thanks. Mr_ dakota.
Once the magnet is taken away the sensor stops transmitting. Any value left on the DIC is being held in memory. What happens when you are driving the car? If everything reads fine when you are driving I wouldn't worry.

I agre with both of the above posts. It sounds like you reversed the order of the rear sensors. If the problem goes away after driving just make sure that you have the rears progrmed in the correct order. If you still have the problem after driving I would suspect that you have a bad sensor. Just make sure you have them programed in the correct order so you are sure which one you need to replace.
I was very careful to get the order right, but I suppose a mistake could happen. I've done the magnet thing at least 3 times since, with the same results each time. The display either leave the value blank or "xxx" where the value should be. I had the car parked for winter storage, never having had a problem with this before. After taking it out of storage, this started happening. The tires are fairly new, so I know that they are holding air, so I may try again later to program them. Just a bit frustrating when parts go bad while a car is parked in a garage. Thanks, all!
if the sensors are the original ones they might be getting weak (6 yrs.)
don't take this the wrong way but just checking to make sure you understand the car has to be in motion to activate the sensors for tire pressure readings.
The reason the fault moved to the left rear is because when you had tires replaced the rear wheels were more than likely put back on the wrong corners ;) In other words, the module cant tell what corner the sensor is on until you retrain the sensors

How much have you driven the car?
The reason I ask I I just put a set of cutom wheels on my car with all new sensors. Due to the unique mounting (they are band clamped towards the inside of the wheel), I trained them to the car before I had the tires mounted. They all trained fine, but were obviously at 0 psi sine there were no tires on. After I got the tires mounted, I bolted the new wheels on the car, and they were still all reading 0psi. I drove it for a mile, 2 of the sensors started to show readings. Another mile later, the 3rd sensor started showing a reading. It wasn't until 10 miles and a day later until the 4th one came up and showed a reading. I was getting worried about it, and was ready to try a retrain on them, but it finally came around on it's own.
Point of this story, if you haven't driven the car much, get out and do so, it may be all you need to do to "wake the sensors up". :D
hey.rockandroll...if thetps message comes on immediately when you fire her up;is that a good indicator that they are toast.my'vette is an'02 that i bought new last may.i've heard that tps failure isn't all that uncommon! :banghead:
Thanks for all the input. After multiple training sessions with those flippin' sensors, I was assuming that I had a bad one there. I've put many miles on the car since I took it out of storage, so lack of driving isn't an issue. I was just kind of hoping that it was something that I could fix/reprogram whatever. I think I'll just carry a good air pressure checker with me and use it every week or so. At least until I can get this repaired. I understand it is not all that inexpensive......
Just a note here. The naughty sensor decided to start working yesterday. When driving, I tend to check that every so often, even though I know it isn't working (you know, like biting down on a sore tooth to make sure it still hurts), and what do you know! It was working correctly. Maybe the "battery gods" decided to put in a fix when I wasn't looking. It will be interesting to see if it stays fixed.
Another follow up. They didn't work, then, all of a sudden, they all work fine. No explanation that I can think of. Then, the LR quit working again, then it works, then quits... ad nauseum. Ya think it's a bad sensor? ya think? :banghead:
