Column lock installed???
I just bought my 99 convertible a few weeks ago and I have been reading a lot about the steering column lock up problem, and I am thinking about installing the bypass before I have a problem. Since I am not the original owner of this car, is there a way to see if the bypass has already been installed. I think I am the fourth owner, so asking the previous owner would not help.

The easy way to tell if any column lock work has been done would be to simply turn the steering wheel with the car off. If it locks, you don't have the column lock block, nor has a dealer fixed it. (On A4 cars like yours, the dealer should be disconnecting the lock completely, but they won't do this on M6 cars).
If the wheel turns free with the key out, some work has been done to it.

Does the column lock when you remove the key??? Being a 1999,if you have an A4,there is a good chance that the recall was performend by a dealer if it does not lock :yesnod:
