Default burning oil

My 01 AT coupe is burning about 2 quarts of oil per 5000 miles after 15k miles. My dealer tells me this is normal. I change oil each 5k miles and drive fast but don't race. What should I expect the oil consumption to be?

Before I had the rings replaced in my 2000, it was burning a quart every 1200 miles. Many on the forum have had much worse consumption rates. At the time I had mine fixed (November 2001), the GM standard for excessive oil consumption was more than 1 quart every 2000 miles. While the car should not burn a quart as quickly as 2500 miles, I doubt that GM will consider it excessive.

IMHO it shouldn't burn any but GM says 1 quart every 2000 miles is acceptable.

Thanks... any problems with the ring job? How was the oil consumption after the fix? What did you have to do to get GM to agree to the repair?

I did not realize the LS6 was a 2 cycle engine. That is an unacceptable oil consumption rate and you should push the General to correct it. Just MHO

I know I will get some hate mail for this, but I have been corresponding with someone on another board who switched from Mobil-1 to Amsoil and had a noticable improvement in oil consumption going from 1-1/2 quarts every 3,000 miles to 1/4 quart in 5,000 miles. The Noack number for Mobil-1 is pretty high and may play into this problem to some degree.

If it were me, before I let the dealer pull the motor apart, I think I would try a different oil and watch for an improvement. At least it's worth a shot.

OK, where did I put that flame suit

IF your a manual tranny and do alot of slow city driving uder high rpms and light load in 2nd gear try driving around in 3rd or 4th gear under less rpms as the General says that should improve oil consumption.
