Default Cam experts, help me out.

Ok, I'm wanting to order a cam before the week's over, and I'd like some help, since I don't really understand all the specs and how to judge how a cam would affect performance just by looking at it's specs. So anyway, I'll post an email that I sent to MTI, and then their reply, and see if I can get some help from the forum. :)

My email:
I have a 2000 C5 coupe. Right now the ONLY mods are battery, hood, and a
Magnuson. I have longtubes\cats\x-pipe\wheels\tires(345's out back) on
order, and I've had a few people suggest 6.0 liter heads. Anyway, to get
to the point, I've heard some good things about the X1 cam, and I was
wondering if it would work well on my car. My car is mostly street driven, but I want a pretty aggressive cam. So would the X1 work well with my car? Any other upgrades that would be required for me to run the cam?

MTI's reply:
The X1 is not the cam I would recommend in your application. A better cam
for you and for the blower would be the C2 camshaft. This is the cam that
the X1 was fashioned after. It was our intent with the X1 to produce a cam
that made the same hp as the C2 but with more torque. To do this we had to
increase the duration significantly then limit the exhaust side. With your
blower you don't need this increased torque. I'm sure what you are after is
the additional power and smoother drivability that the C2 would offer.

Mr. Pepsi's ?'s for the forum:
Ok, in the fourth sentence, they said that the C2 makes the same hp as the X1, but without as much torque. I'm assuming that they mean that the X1 makes more torque at lower rpm's, since hp is just a way of measuring how well you make torque at higher rpm's. So I guess that he's suggesting the C2 because it make LESS torque at low rpm's, and would therefore give me less problems with traction. The thing is though, if I can get the same peak hp numbers with both cams, then I'd like to go with the cam that makes more power at low rpm's (the X1). After all, more power at any rpm is ALWAYS a good thing (you'll just want better tires  ). Because of his comments, I'm still thinking that the X1 might be better for me, DESPITE HIS RECCOMENDATION OF THE C2 CAM OVER THE X1! So can anybody help me in choosing a cam? If the only real performance difference between the two cams is that the X1 makes more power at low rpms (and the same peak hp numbers), then I'd rather go with the X1. Also, it's not like I'm definately going to up my gear ratio. I'll just need to see how traction is once I get all my power mods before seeing if I want to go with a higher ratio (please note that my 345's will effectively (numerically) LOWER my gear ratio). Can somebody PLEASE help me out????

Go a third of the way down the page for info on the cams: http://www.motorsporttech.com/c5_engine01.asp

Thanks for the help!!!!!

Also, what kind of upgrades (springs, etc.) would I need to run either of these cams???

I don't know all the ins and outs of cam choices. I do know that MTI knows there stuff. They won't steer you wrong. I have heard many stories of people not taking the advice of their tuner, and being sorry later. I think what they are telling you is that with your Magnusson, you have all the torque you need, and the X1 won't get you enough more torque to matter.

Take my advice, and heed MTI's advice. They have treated me very well and I couldn't be happier with the job they have done for me.

The X1's cam specs have more on the intake, 230/227. A typical blower cam will be just the opposite. So they are true in stating the X1 would not be preferable. However the C2 would leave some to be desired IMO. Personally I would go with something like a 224/230 on a 114 lsa to help it idle well and make more power up top (since the blower is making PLENTY down low)

6 liter heads are a good idea too, they will allow you to lower the compression some as well as gain more power if done correctly.

You might want to get in touch with Andy at A&A or MMS in California, they've done NUMEROUS heads/cam/blower setups. Perhaps they could provide more insight.

Good luck
