After going from 2.73 to 3.15, with the PT convertor, and exhaust my idle sometimes goes a little low around 500 or so when I put in gear. When I try to turn the AC on when in park it kills. My question is should I get the idle raised via ls1 edit or someother programmer or could this be the cause of low battery life which I do have and need a new one.
IMHO, it's unlikely due to your gears or convertor, unless that new convertor is a really tight one...tighter than stock which is rather unlikely.
If your battery is low on voltage and is not charging properly because it's basically shot, that may be an issue. When voltage is low, the engine will run rich. Rich enough to make for hard starts and rough idle quality.
I suggest, since you've identified the battery as being faulty already, you get a new battery and see if everything clears up. BTW, was your battery disconnected for an extended period of time, say during the installs? That could weaken it enough to cause these issues. GOOD LUCK! Post what you find, please.
Just curious: what was your idle BEFORE any mods? My new '03 idles at 550 in 'D', and it's the lowest I've ever seen on any car. The battery IS very small for our engine; I'm charging it every week, and takes quite a bit of time to get to full charge. I can see how it can be killed very quicky without charging it often, especially with options like 'approach' enabled.
Why is the idle so low? Emissions crap again?
There also are a lot of engine noises at idle in 'P'; first ever too. Oh well.
To be honest, I never noticed what the idle was before. But I know I need a new battery. When the Stock one went out, I was so ready to drive the car I bought a very cheap one from walmart and have been using it for about 4 months and its about crapped out. I think I paid $35 :bb I just wanted to ride so I had to do it.
Do the idle relearn procedure. I had a similar problem when I put my 3500 rpm Vigilante on. After I did the idle relearn procedure (search for it in the archives), it idled like a champ and never died after that.
RWhite, That was probably because your battery was disconnected for the install. I can't imagine an effect the torque convertor would have on idle. At least, I've never seen one
This new optima red top battery fixed the problem with it wanting to die when I turn on the ac. Thanks for the help guys. I will do some research on that idle relearn procedure though..
