Well, I will be getting a used C5 vette soon, and I am planing my first basic modifications. I/H/E.
I want to go with the blackwing, FLP long tube headers, and Borla stinger cat back exhaust.
Now...one question is...is the borla and flp system compatible and will they hook up without problems? And I would like a full exhaust system, headers all the way back.....What do you recomend using between the headers and borla system? Sorry if anything I say does not make since, I am somewhat new to the corvette.
So, what kind of power do you think I would see with that I/H/E set up?
Oh and this is my first post, this forum seems to be a great souce of information with very knowledgeable people.
And so that I don't need to post a whole new topic, what suspension set up is recomended? I am looking for pretty aggressive handling. So far I know Iwant the hotchiks sway bar kit, and I am not sure what shocks/springs to get. I do want the car lower, but not to low, it will be a daily driver (i can deal with a harsh ride, i kinda like it). So, I only want to lower it about 1 inch.
The FLP header system is complete all the way to the flange by the rear axle...where the stingers will bolt to. It comes with the cats, off-road pipes, and the X-pipe. They are completely compatible, and with those 2 systems, your exhaust will be 100% new from the heads to the massive stinger tips.
As for hp increases with the above mods and blackwing, I would guess 30hp or so. You'll definitely notice the difference.
If you're buying an 01 or later Vette, it will come with the LS6 intake. Is it worth it to add on an older one? Probably. Alone, it won't gain you much, but I would consider it a prerequisite for any future major mods, like a head/cam package.
Thank you. Answered all my engine modification questions. I would be getting a 99-00 more then likly, possibly a 98 if it has low miles and the price is right, so I can get more mods.
Would the car be steet legal? Or I should say, will it pass smog with the full exhaust?
Yes, it will be street legal as long as you use the cats and stay away from the off road pipes that come with the FLPs. I just passed emmisions last week with the same setup...but that's in Illinois. I'm not sure about California though. I think I remember Jim Hall mentioning that he has to take off his airbox everytime he has to go take a smog test. I would assume the blackwing would be the same way...that's just my guess though.
FYI, as far as HP is concerned, as noted 30 HP is a pretty good guess. I was dyno tuned because I was a bit rich and I ended up around a 40HP gain at the wheels compared to when my car was stock.
I have this exact exhaust. The Flp long tubes with borla stingers. Completely compatible kit. Did my own installation with a friend that actually slowed me down a bit more than helped and had it all together in about 8 hours. With an hour or so break. Absolutely love this setup. Happy hunting
The LS6 intake is definately worth it. It will only enhance every mod that you do to the car. It is a great mod to have.
As far as suspension, you could go with Z06 swaybars and springs or go with some aftermarket. I believe Hotchkins makes some nice swaybars. Either way subframe connectors are good to have. You can lower the car with a kit that costs around $40, or there is information somewhere on how to do it with local hardware stor parts.
Good choice with the FLP's and Borla stingers, that is a killer combo.
So whats a good shock/spring to use. I would want something more agressive then Z06 suspension. I have read the the Bilstein shocks are nice, what about springs though? Ones that only lower the car about an inch. Pretty stiff too.
On a C5 you lower with a kit, you don't use the springs to lower the car. Bilstien are great shocks and for the money are the best. You could go with Hal's for a more adjustable suspension if you want to. I don't know of many aftermarket springs. If you want something real aggressive you might look into a full Coil-over kit. I know that www.lgmotorsports.com makes a kit for the C5.
Unlike most coil spring setups, our cars have completely adjustable ride height from the factory! No new springs required! The bolt that connects the lower control arm to the spring determines the ride height. Take a look at the Techtips section: tools->techtips and it'll give you the complete step-by-step.
Sway bars- you have a lot of choices here. You can go with the Z06 (my choice), Hotchis- stifffer and more $$$, or T1- super stiff, same $$$ as Hotchis. The T1 are supposed to be pretty rough.
Springs- there's not a lot of choices here. Vette Brakes and Performance makes after market leaf springs, but they're expensive. You can do what I did (am doing, actually) and get a set of Z06 take-offs. MUCH cheaper.
Shocks- depends on what you're going to be doing. The Bilsteins are quite popular, but I wanted adjustability. However, buy the Koni's, NOT the QA1's. I've had nothing but problems with my QA1 shocks.
