Got the car back after frequent column lock episodes. Was told that the sensor that reads the resistor was bad. This was under warranty. For those of you without warranty, this will set you back $350.00
There IS a recall, but it is limited to a specific series of serial numbers and years. If you are not "lucky" enough to be in the covered period, you pay. The problem is the same, the parts are the same, but the question of who pays the bill depends on some bean counter at GM. :mad

i got mine fixed for free. It was under warranty. But I asked the guy what it would have cost without the GMPP, and he said $350.00. They replaced the ignition. You know the mechanism that you put your key in.... They had to send it out to a locksmith to have it re-keyed to my key.
Your information is not correct. The Chevrolet column lock repair is not a "government required safety RECALL".
The Chevrolet "fix" is considered a SATISFACTION CAMPAIGN. It provides for a free modification of the locking steering column assembly until July 1, 2003. It is not even considered a recall and is not required.
Chevrolet has resisted recalling the affected C5's and the NHTSA does not consider the problem a safety matter since the car is immobilized by the defect. However, I disagree since my wife and I were stranded while out-of-state and I consider being stranded with no communication and an inoperable car a safety issue.
Thanks for the heads up on the timing. My 2000 MN6 coupe was built sometime in June, and I called the dealer last year to check the VIN number to see if the column lock needed replacement. They told me my vehicle was not included in the service bulletin. I now am getting a "Service Column Lock" message in the DIC everytime I start the car. Any suggestions? I guess I need to take it in.
Just had the fix last month. Cost $425 including labor. Filed complaint with NHTB but getting a response is another story. The recall is a 'silent' one. Only doesn't include the 97 so if you have one you are out of luck. Also during the service work the tech broke the power seat module. The dealer claims they didn't do it and cost another $350. When asked to speak to the service manager both he and his flunky asst would not come out to talk. So filed a claim with the BBB. Now I know what it's like to get reamed without vasoline.
