My dealer has finally agreed to replace my clutch hydraulics (after showing the service manager the GM VME re "clutch sticking to the floor"). This is a 2000 FRC with a little over 380 hp at the wheels.
But he will not spring for the ZO6 pieces, so I have agreed to do so as long as he installs them under warranty. My question is - I am certain the ZO6 clutch/flywheel assembly itself and the slave cylinder are upgraded from the normal C5 pieces. I am not certain about the master cylinder. Since I do not want to pay extra for a "ZO6" master if it is the same as the regular C5 part, can anyone tell me with certainty if there is any difference?? Need this info urgently. Thanks, Robert
I dont know if the master is the same part # or not.. When I went to replace my clutch assembly, I went with all aftermarket parts and have never had a problem since.
You dealer is not "springing" for anything. GM is picking up the tab. The TSB calls for Z06 components to fix the C5 problem. If they replace with C5 clutch components you will be right back in the shop again - soon.
My 2001 C5 convertible had the 'ol clutch lock on the floorboard syndrom. My local dealer reviewed TSB's and notices from GM. The fix was an all Z06 assembly install - flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disk, slave/master and throwout. I had to pay the $40 for zero-balancing all the parts before they installed (I urge you to do likewise, parts were out of balance by 26 grams!). That was all I paid for. Total job took 4 days, including the outside machining.
Now, I did have to conduct a "come to Jesus" meeting with the dealer to get their attention and to have then review TSB's. They always want to take the easy road.
Re: Need help with clutch problems (jeanlucpicard)
Thanks guys. I think I have figured out that the clutch assembly itself is different between the regular C5 and the ZO6, but the hydraulics (master & slave) are the same part numbers for current replacement parts.
(C5 clutch assembly part# is 12570281, ZO6 assembly is 12570806. Clutch slave is 12562767, master is 12564455 for both).
Since I want the upgraded clutch whether or not the tech finds that there is excessive runout, I have ordered the ZO6 clutch assembly and will have it precision balanced at a machine shop when received. Then since the dealer has agreed to replace everything under warranty, at least I will not have to pay for anything else but the clutch assembly (about $350 delivered from GMParts Direct) plus balancing.
Since I have raced the car and currently do track events, frankly I do not find this to be a bad deal. If yours is a street-only car, I would hold out for complete replacement, though I don't quite know how you can argue about the clutch assembly if it is not the current warranty replacement part.
I would appreciate hearing of others' experience with this problem (including any TSB# if there is one).

Thanks. Before I am totally committed to a new stock ZO6 clutch, I would really appreciate any advice you have re aftermarket pieces. I know this has been the subject of many posts, and I had decided it sounded too complicated and expensive to consider. But please tell me about it - I'm not a drag racer, just trying to put a lot of HP down on the track and keep my clutch from sticking to the floor!
I had my clutch replaced about 2 months ago. Changed to a compete Z06 system including hydraulics. Couldn't be happier. The pedal feel is very light but the clutch shows no sign of slipping, even under heavy launches.

I installed the Dual Disc McLeod Clutch Assembly with an Aluminum Flywheel, Z06 slave and an AP adjustable Master Cylinder. The parts and installation came to $3700. This clutch setup is good for 1100 or 1200 hp...
I thought I read some where here that from 01 or 02 on, all C5's received the Z06 clutch. If someone can confirm that, tell the dealer to replace it with an 02 clutch at the same price. :D
