Default More torque converter questions!

Damn I feel guilty posting yet ANOTHER thread on T/C's... must be the most :smash: to death topic on the forum!

Anyway, I feel a little better now I've fessed-up my guilty conscience :blueangel:

Right, here goes:

I know a higher-stall converter will give me a harder launch, BUT is there any benefit from a roll? For example, if you're manually shifted to 2nd and gun it, will a 3000-stall converter provide more thrust up to 3,000rpm than stock? From roll-on races, I can only really see any benefit in 2nd-gear... any other gear and the tranny will downshift anyway.

Can anyone chime-in with a PT2400 or 2800 (or Y3000)? What's your car like from a roll (compared to stock)?

Also, would I be inviting the Grim Reaper to take my trans by installing a T/C (other mods in sig)? Car has 27k miles and is a daily driver. I don't have the money to pay for a tranny rebuild! The car will not be raced (except for a few ET's) and is driven moderately hard on the street.

Want more performance... I want that real slam-you-back-in-the-seat feel... wanna make my passenger involuntarily curse when I floor it! :D

Tell me what I need!

Thanks guys 'n' gals :flag

I have had the PT2400 and it does not help much from a roll, but it does give you alot of grunt out of the hole. If you want a dynomite combo from a roll the Yank SY3500 and 3.73 gears will be hard to beat. With this combo you will no longer have any dead spots when you floor the go pedal. :yesnod: How long your tranny will last depends on how you drive your car and how well you maintain it, install a tranny cooler and change your fluid often and the A4 tranny can last a long time if you don't constantly beat on it.

i just installed a yank st3500 and 3.42's. coming from stock t/c and 2.73's this will give you what you want. my driving habits are alot like yours and i also don't have x-tra cash for new tranny. its hits really hard out of the gates and from a roll its a beast from 20mph to 40mph to 120mph. try this combo you will not be disappointed. :yesnod:

I went with a 3.73 and kept the tc stock for now. I may regret not doing it all together due to cost but car definitly takes off a lot different than it did with the 3.15's. I also went Z06 sized pilot sports and I believe they hook up better than the run flats. I will have to ride in a fellow members car to see if the launch everyone talks about is worth the extra wear and tear on the tranny. Just my .02

I have 3.73 gears with the stock TC. The car is traction limited from a 20mph roll with the stock EMT tires. It pulls realy strong in all gears with no "dead spots".

Being traction-limited is my main concern when considering a T/C. I'm running Dunlop SP9000 street tyres (daily driver) and my launch is pretty much on the limit of available traction as it is with the stock T/C. I see no point in upgrading the T/C if I can't transfer the newfound increase in RWTQ to the road.

Ideally, I would like a LITTLE stronger launch (maybe 2400rpm stall?) and a nice increase in acceleration from a roll. However, I believe torque multiplication (over stock) only occurs below stall speed. For instance, if I had a SY3500 and floored the car from a 10mph roll in 2nd-gear, the converter would flash to 3,500rpm and hold it there until my road speed forced the revs higher. Obviously, this would improve my roll-on acceleration because the converter is transferring more torque from the engine to the rear wheels. However, with a smaller converter (like a PT2400), it wouldn't take long for the revs to rise beyond the stall speed, so torque multiplication would be short-lived and acceleration from a roll would be similar to stock.
Am I making sense? I know, I want my cake and wanna eat it too :smash:

It's all about learning how to use the throttle a bit more precisely. I have a SY3500+3.73s. Can lay down rubber for what feels like a mile at the drop of a hat. However, it's my daily driver so I learned how not to do that fairly quickly. There are throttle positions other than UP and DOWN. :D Plenty of value in the converter if you use them.

No. I see multiplication up to like 4800 or so with the SY. I can't find the plot that I had that shows this at the moment, but don't think there's no multiplication above rated stall. This is one of the reasons many folks love this (style of) converter. How much torque multiplication there is, where it is, and how fast it falls off are key characteristics used to pick the right converter.

I'm running the SY3500 and 3.42's(plus TransGo) and from a
30mph roll, the car just absoute scoots. Less than 30 and I
will get some wheel spin. Not as much now that I'm running the
GY GS-D3's instead of RF's From 60mph...it's the same thing.
My car is not a daily driver and sees the track every now and then.

My car is a daily driver also.I have no problem with the gears and they are a ton of fun. My point was if you have stock tires and you want max acceleration from a 20 mph role you are traction limited with a 3.73 gear. You are geting 3.06*3.73 = 11.4 torque multiplication just from the gears.
