I have read articles about GM and how they rate the HP of the stock Corvettes at the low end of the spectrum, to assure that any Vette that rolls off the assembly line meets the claims due to the variability from motor to motor. Today I took my 2003 C5 6SPD and had it dyno'd, just to see where I start before tinkering with it -- I got 306.6RWHP/326.3ftlbs. Is this average, good, poor?? Does anyone know?? Just curious.
If you take your rear wheel figures times the accepted multiplier of 1.15 to convert from rw to approximate flywheel performance, you'll see you are pretty much right on GM's published performance data for a 6-speed LS-1.
I doubt that this varies significantly from engine to engine, given today's machining methods and computerized engine controls. This isn't the '60's where it was as you suggest. If it were, Ford and Mazda wouldn't have been in such hot water when a couple of their products' performance didn't measure up to what was advertised.
Today, performance is too big a marketing ploy with such vehicles to risk under-reporting power in the market place. Even in the 'ol days it was insurance rates that dictated fudged factory figures more than anything else.
It looks like there is a 12% loss with MN6 cars. 350HP less 12% is 308 which seems to be about the average RWHP you guys are getting. Using a 15% loss for manual and a 20% loss for autos is an old wives tales/rule of thumb. The correct way to determine loss is to do the math backwards. Every car has a different % of loss depending on drivetrain frictional losses. For the vette it seems like 12% for MN6 and 14% for A4's.
Check my sig for my numbers with only a Vortex & Corsa Indy. I can't wait to get my new G5X2 Cam, UD Pulley, LS6 intake and FLP's installed. I'm hoping for 420+ after a custom dyno tune.
These numbers can be deceiving. There are different types of Dynos and correction factors. STD-corrected numbers are normally higher than SAE-corrected, so don't assume everyone's car was tested using SAE correction. My car was tested on a dyno that used STD correction and I'll bet those who posted similar numbers did the same.
I think you're right in the bell curve. Mine, stock and with a Vortex rammer air box, and 3.73 gears, dyno'd at 314 rwhp. I don't recall the torque, but I think it was lower than yours. :seeya
