Default Squeaky Brakes!!! Help!!!!

My wife's Y2K Vert has a brake squeak problem. This was only after I had the rotors turned and installed new Raybestos brake pads. :banghead: If you press the brakes real firmly, it isn't as bad. I spoke with one of the members in our club about it and they told me that they have been told by a couple of "brake guys" that you can't use anything but GM brake pads on the fronts. Sometimes you can get away with using aftermarket on the rear, but not the front.

GM dealer wanted $188 for the front pads!!! I found them for $66 delivered from gmpartsdirect... guess where I bought them. And when they arrived, they were shipped from a GM dealer !!! :mad

My delimma is that after putting the GM pads on the front, it is much better, but I still get a squeak at about half pressure on the pedal. I am thinking that the rears are just engaging at that point and could still be the rest of my squeak. Before I go and buy more pads for the rear, I thought I would tap the vast knowledge of the Forum...

Any ideas???

A couple of things: GMpartsdirect is actually a dealer in North Carolina. That doesn't mean they aren't good, I use them all the time and haven't found anybody better.

I am going to guess all you need to do is get the pads to seat into the rotors a little better. Go someplace safe and make about 8 stops from 55 MPH. Don't slam the brakes on, just use firm pressure but NOT enough to lock them up. Allow enough time between stops to let the brakes cool (about 3 to 4 minutes if you are moving on the road). That should get the pads and rotors working together a little better. Also there are all kinds of aftermarket pads that work just fine on C5s.

When the brakes are reassembled, there are several locations that need to be lubed with a high temp silicone grease to insure that there is no noise. The caliper sliders, peel back the rubber boot and make sure that they are well lubed - 2 per brake. The point of contact where the pad backing plate rests in the caliper bridge - 4 per brake. And finally the contact surface on each pad backing plate where it meets the caliper or caliper piston - 2 per brake. These points need lube, not much, just a coating to insure that any movement will not be metal to metal. Also check out all the spring hardware for proper tension. There are two spring retaining clips on each caliper bridge that the tangs on the backing plate fit into and one large spring clip in the top of the caliper. If any of these clips has lost tension, they can cause a most aggrivating squeek. If you have any that are bad, replace them all. They are available as a kit only anyway.

I had the same problem only reversed. I changed my rotors and went the the Raybestos QS pads. My fronts were fine and quiet, my rears squeeled like a pig. After trying everything I could find to solve it, I just put STOCK pads on the rear and all is well.
