Default Tire Wear

Ran 20K+ on the stock runcraps. Going to buy the GY F1 GS-D3 from TireRack. Agressive dry tire and with excellent wet traction (does rain occassionally in Colorado).

Question: All four of my runcraps wore more in the center than on the edges. "Considerably more". I checked the air pressure at least every other week and always ran 30psi in the tires. Noticed the wear in the center but was looking for a reason to trash the runcraps anyway. But has anyone else had this problem and would reducing the air pressure to 29 or 28psi help this condition?

Thanks for the input,
Lonnie

Could the higher altitude/lower air pressure have anything to do with it? Center wear is almost always indicative of over-inflation (I think).

Just my $0.02

I too always thought center wear was due to higher than normal air pressure. But I kept it at 30psi.

Never tought about the altitude. But I don't leave this area very often so I don't think that altitude had much to do with it either.

Just wondering if anyone has lowered their air pressure to even out the tire wear?

You are going to love the Goodyear F1 GS-D3's. I got 24,000 out of the runcraps. I couldn't hear "the boss" over the noise from the runcraps - hey, maybe that was a good thing!!

Vetteman4047

Was your wear pretty even across the tire with 30psi?

I run mine at 30 and the tyre wear is even. Tyre wear signs of over-inflation and under-inflation are the same regardless of the car. If the tyres were wearing unevenly I'd have surely adjusted the pressure and not waited for them to wear out. Maybe your guage is inaccurate or you didn't check them often enough. This should have been done on your previous car too.

Not leaving the area doesn't matter. If I remeber correctly, CO SPGS itself is like 4000 feet above sea level, which could be influential. I just moved from Fort Collins, CO and when I got to Dallas, I had to add air to the tires on my Tahoe to make up for the difference. The only way I can explain it is when I drove from Fort Collins (4800' asl) to Vail (~8000' asl) I had a sealed water bottle in the car. When I got to Vail (a ~3000' change in elevation) the water bottle looked like I had inflated it with an air compressor. The outside air pressure was lower so the air inside the water bottle expanded. This could be a similar phenomenon (SP?) to what you are describing. Most of the tire inflation guidelines are made for sea level elevations.

Default 30F, 29R

Guys & Ladies,

I don't know if it will make a difference, as I bought my '00 FRC used w/34k. I spoke to previous owner who kept tires at 30F and 30R. The rears have more center wear, while the fronts look like new--even wear so far.

I dropped the rears to 29psi, which should be fine since the Vette has 53/47 weight distribution by my memory. It is now in the 90s in the Dallas area, and after driving a good distance the tires even out at 34F and 34R.

I must be the only person in the world who likes the runflats. The noise doesn't bother me since I ride motorcycles (and wear earplugs). Driving always seems quiet to me. I'm not deaf yet!

I replaced the run craps right after i bought my 98 used 9car had ~32K miles and it appeared the run craps were original but pretty mujch worn out). Put Michelin Pilot Sport A/S stock sizes thinking i would get lot sof miles as the tires are rated at a 400 treadwear. But my rears wore to the belt in 25Kmiles (fronts still have plenty of tread, and sholders of rear still lots of tread). Had a little higher pressue in for a while at the recommendation of my alighnment shop(32-34psi), noticed the center wear prematurely and cut back to 30 psi and then 28 psi.

I looked at the goodyear GS-D3 also, but decided to go with the Kumho MX - cost is much less and most forum members like the tire. Hate paying the michelin premium and only getting 25K miles. Hope the Kumho's last for 20kmiles.... I will watch pressure better, probably keep at 28 cold.
These dang tires are expensive.... , but I bet if i drove like an old granny I would get lots more miles....

OK here we go.. first of all I got 40,000 miles out of my Goodyear EMT's.. the reson was... I ran 28 psi.. and I am conscious of hot tire presure not cold tire pressure.. when the tires are cold.. the pressure is the lowerst...if you drive on a black top road on a 90 degree day in the summer... the road temp can get to 160 F.. this causes the tire prsssure to go up.. as mich as 5 or 6 pounds.. many many ppl use cold tire presure as a standard.. but thast is why their tires wear out in the middle..many guyd have listened to my tip on tire pressure and are getting much better tire wear.. also... tire noise is not due to the EMT as much as it is to the lack of insulation in your C5 .. I insulated the entire car.. and reduced tire noise by 40 %... if you dont believe me .. just walk down to the highway and listen to tire noise of cars that pass.... they all make noise.. cadilacs lincolns lexus all make noise.. but these card have 50 to 60 pounds of sound deadening insulation.. also there is nothing between you and the rear rear tires but an inner fender well.. ita piece of 1/8 inch plastic...if you remove it you can see right into the cabin.. I insulated my whole car for 50 dollars..
