I've never had a ball joint on anything including this car come apart without a removal tool. Most stores sell pickle forks but they can damage the ball joint seal, shop around and you'll find one that looks like a c-clamp with a slot in it.

You don't have to remove anything to cut the bushings. If you jack up the front and support it with jackstands on the crossmember you will see that you can get to the bushings through the lower control arms. Just raise the end of the spring very slightly with a bottle jack to relieve the pressure on the bushing and use a course tooth hacksaw blade and some silicone lube to keep it from sticking. I did mine in about 20 minutes and never removed anything. Just go slow and make a straight cut.
