I have a 98 convertible with about 17K miles on it. The problems all started when I took the car to the dealer to get a tire pressure sensor changed. When I picked the car up, all the warning light s came on , ABS, traction system, check engine, etc. I was in a hurry, so I shut down and restarted the car. Everything was normal, so I proceeded off. A few weeks later, I was on a trip on an interstate. Running at about 80-85 in heavy traffic the engine just shut down with no warning. Actually, it didn't shut down all the way, but might as well have. I managed to get off the road without getting run over ( real exciting from the inside lane) and shut the engine off. When I reastarted, I got power back with a "check engine" light. I made it the rest of the way home without incident and took the car back to the dealer. They told me it was a blown fuse for the throttle position sensor. That didn't make much sense, but the car ran and there was a N/C on th ticket. The car has been driven less that 50 miles since then. The other day, I started out of the garage and didn't make it to the end of the driveway before I got the "reduced power" message again. I haven't had time to get it back to the dealer yet. Actually, unless I can get it to run a little better I guess I'm going to have to get it flatbedded to the dealer. It is still under a GM extended warranty, but the time on the warranty will expire in a few months, so I want to be sure it gets fixed right first.
Any ideas on what's going on with this car?
Disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes.
Turn key on for 11 minutes to run position (don't start)
Turn key off for 30 seconds.
Repeat two more times.
This relearns/resets things. Helped me when I changed the rear and had the battery disconnected for a while. Engine kept stalling and had reduced engine power and check this/that/ the other thing messages.
I had the problem with my previous 2000 coupe. It took a while to figure out but is was a clogged condensation line for the air conditioner. It resulted in water pudlling around and getting the main computer wet. Ask them to inspect that little hose carefully. Run the air conditioner for a while, pull up and park. Look under the car, normally, when its not clogged, a trickle of water comes out and spills on the pavement. If its not doing that, I suspect you have the same problem I did.
