I am getting ready to install my new thermostat, and the dealer told me NOT to run the anti-freeze that was originally in the car from the factory. He said it will set off all kind of codes and the check engine light. Could anyone PLEASE assist me with this and let me know what I should do, because I don't want to hurt my baby. Thanks in advance for any assistance you guys/gals will give me. :chevy
Is he saying you should go to the green stuff, or just that you should do a coolant change? Assuming your coolant isn't that old, I would not even expect to need a coolant change. I'd do it, just for convenience's sake, if the car had more than 25K miles.
He said with a lower degree thermostat, that the Dexron Coolant will make the car run richer, this makes no sense, but I thought I would I ask the almighty forum members.
I run the Dex, Water Wetter and distilled water. Never had a problem. I am at 100600 miles and getting ready to do it again. From the look of the fluid, it does not appear to need it. I have the 175 degree high flow thermostat and even in the hottest weather I rarely get above 190 (yes my fans have been reprogramed!) On the average I run in the 180s. Unless they changed the Dex since I purchased the car in 98 (It is a 98 rag top) I am going with the same stuff!
So :iagree: they are feeding you :bs
Maybe someone has a different cut on it.

Yeah, and if you run 89 octane your tire pressure will go up.
I don't see how the type of coolant could affect your fuel mixture. Sounds like some fairly bizarre info to me!
Sounds like he was saying that a lower temp might effect the mixture. (Giving him the benefit of the doubt here) Don't let him snow you on Dexcool and don't change it.
:bs I put a 160 degree thermostate in my 00 Hardtop two years ago and had no problems. You want to ONLY use the red stuff type coolant installed in the factory, the green is a big no no.
The only thing I could suggest is .... stay away from that dealership...
the 160 works great... but I change it back to 195 for the winter.. I can chaage the thermostat in less than five minutes... I dont drain anything.. two bolts to the housing and the hose clamp... the hise tucks under another hose to hold it in place..swap the housings and torque...the two bolts replace the hose.. then top of the collant usually about a pint or so..
