Howling Diff.
I changed from a 2:73 to a 3:42 about 3 years ago and lately have noticed a howling noise only when under light load. It used to be only noticeable about 40-50 mph and would stop the second you lift off the gas but now it is getting a bit louder and more noticeable at lower speeds but still under load conditions. The car has the GM Plus extended warranty but they won't honor the rear end because it only carried a 1 year from the time they installed it. The car makes about 430 rwhp on NOS which is much lower than many other cars with blowers and turbos and I never hear about rearends failing on these rides. Can anyone tell me what might be the problem? Do you think it's the pinion bearing ? Should I look for a good used low mileage diff. or get the one that's in my car repaired? GM quoted me 11.8 hrs. at 78.00 per hr. plus parts and they only charged me 5.5 hrs to r&r the diff. originally. Gentlemen give me your thoughts.
