Default Blackwing Maintenance??

Guys & Ladies,

I'm more than happy with my Blackwing and Vortex Power Air Duct--great SOTP.

A couple of questions for you folks who've had 'em for a while:

1. I know it was pre-oiled when installed--or was it? I hope so as I've been running it for about 400 miles. Is the filter oil blue like the K&N oil is red?

2. I just ordered a Blackwing cleaning kit. How often would you recommend cleaning it? My guess is about every 20k miles. My car is a daily driver, and I don't drive on dirt roads, etc.

I know it is hard to tell someone when to clean their filter, but just trying to get a general idea based on long-term users.

I know that cleaning a filter too often is bad, as I've heard that the dirt that gathers on the outside helps act as part of the filter media.

I'm guessing this based on K&N experience. Is the Blackwing a different beast, other than the synthetic media?

Thanks,

Karl

I just installed the Blackwing and purchased the maintainance kit also. I would think that since the filter comes sans kit it would be all set to install (pre-oiled).
As far as when to clean the filter I think there is a "guage" on the filter housing that shows "red" when cleaning is called for. Good Luck and save the wave.

Yes it is pre-oiled and yes you should use the gauge to determine when it needs to be cleaned.

It is pre-oiled and you can go by the guage that is on the driver's side of the cleaner. Will probably last for about 20K miles like you said, but could be less depending on what conditions you drive in.
