When I purchased my 2000 auto the engine running temps usually reached 200's in heavy traffic but lately it's in the 230 range all the time. I've never changed the coolant and was thinking perhaps the thermostat was rusted and won't open fully. Is this visible when taken out? If thats the problem i'll just change the termostat and coolant. Any other parts should be changed at that time?
I will install the same thermostat as oem, 180 I believe, although I believe many in the forum have opted for 165, but the fuel usage will be higher?
Saludos and thanks for sharing your experience :chevy

My tstat failed, one stage wouldn't open....not good, and temps well above 230. The shop that replaced it for me showed how it was stuck, but I wouldn't have known it on my own. I got a 178 tstat replacement - and had the fans changed with LS1 edit. Generally, I never see temps higher than 190/195 and my oil stays around 200 to 215. Read the link posted above. Very good info in that post.
