Just curious, how can you recognize knock retard?

I've heard people talk about it, and I understand what it is, but what are the "symptoms"? Does the car just not accelerate like normal, does the DIC display a message, or do you have to have some sort of monitoring device to diagnose it?
Thanks

You proably will not notice it unless you are getting a lot of it. Run any loggiing software and it will stand out in the file. I was getting a ton of KR when I installed a relocated temp sensor on my 99. The KR was so bad that the car felt like it was surging Which it was since the PCM was pulling the timing back to kill the knock. Autotap or EFI Live will define it for you.

:iagree:
Have a tech in the passenger seat with Auto Tap (GM scan tool) plugged in and taker out to the hwy for some WOT testing! Any timing retard will show on the appropriate screen on the Auto tap.

I had the same problem as you...the car felt like it was pulling strong but the times at the track just didn't sound right. I had another forum member AutoTap my car and sure enough there was tons of KR. I have been troubleshooting it for the past month or so and finally bought EFI Live last week. I was finally able to pinpoint my problem today and now know what was causing it...definatley worth the $$$ in my opinion...I would have never have caught it if I didn't have the scanning software...
The Granatelli MAF was causing the problems...knock was up to 9* with the GMAFS...when I put the stock MAF back on the knock went away....go figure...
