I blew the trans line goin to the radiator today, anybody know how much it holds, and how to check the level.I got under he car today and its not obvious where the fill is or how to check the level.
Not sure about the quantity, but fill it up until it runs out of the fill hole. Unscrew the plug on the left side of the tranny pan. Start and stop a couple of times after checking the fluid level.
Al, The bottom of my trany looks different than yours. The bolt along side of the case sits alot lower. It looks more like a drain plug.I figure I lost a couple of quarts of fluid when the line blew off. I took and loosened the bolt along side the trany and fluid started to dribble out.
With oil pan removal - 5 qts; with a complete overhaul - 10.8 qts.
Start the engine and allow the engine to idle until the transmission fluid temperature has reached the value specified.
Depress the brake pedal and move the shift lever through the gear ranges, pausing a few seconds in each range. Return the shift lever to the PARK range.
Raise the vehicle on a hoist. The vehicle must be level with the engine running and the shift lever in the PARK range. Caution
The engine must be running when the transmission fluid fill plug is removed, or excessive fluid loss will occur. Transmission fluid may be hot. Since the actual fluid level is unknown, stand clear when removing the fill plug. Have a container ready to capture any lost fluid. Do not turn the engine off with the fill plug removed, as you can be injured by hot transmission fluid being expelled out of the oil fill opening.
Remove the transmission plug.
Important
The transmission fluid may darken with normal use and does not always indicate contamination or oxidation.
Fluid should be level with the bottom of the plug hole. A pipe cleaner is a good dipstick, but in case you don't smoke a pipe, bend a plastic tie strap and use it.
