Default Cooling Problems

I have a 02 C5 with 28K all stock for the next month. However I recently noticed the temp going up to 217 and the temp was about 75 outside during the evening. Also before it went well beyond the 220 mark according to the idiot gauge on the dash this was sitting at a red light along the beach on a humid day with temps around 85. However with the A/C on the temp usually stays at 210 or lower sitting in traffic on a hot day. I know the fan comes on with the A/C, so this probably accounts for the lower temps with it running. However should it be running this hot??????

The highest I've seen mine go is ~215 in stop & go traffic in 100 degree dallas weather with the A/C on. So if you're going over 220 on a 75 degree day at a light, something is probably wrong. You didn't give enough info to make a guess at what, but I'd wager something is amiss.

Good luck!

What you are describing is normal operating temps for the C5. At times it may peak at 230 or 232 deg. So dont worry, this is normal for this car and you do not have to do anything to change the cooling system. From time to time, you will have to check the front of the radiator and pull out anything that may be trapped in front of it... just reach up under the nose of the car and feel around for anything that does not belong. Of course do this when the car is cold. ;)

Thanks,

I contacted the dealer out here and he said the fan comes on at 220 degrees but that seems a little warm. Thanks for the advise, I will keep watching it.

I don't think 220 is high. I don't have my service manuals in front of me, but looked into this when I first got my '00. I used to be in South Florida in heavy traffic and see similar temps.

The two cooling fans in the C5 come on at different times depending on coolant temp and/or AC operation. With the AC off, the first fan comes on around 230-235 and the second comes on if the temp goes higher. When the AC is on, at least one fan is always on but again the service manual outlines the exact combination and temps for 1 or both fans.

It's not uncommon to see the temp hit the 230s, have fan kick in and cool down to 217 then rise again especially in stop and go traffic. If you have access to a service manual it will be clear.

Normal temps for stock fan settings, if you reprogram your fans to come on earlier(200 or so) the temp shouldn't go above 210 in normal driving around town even with A/C off, even with stock thermostat.
