Re: Difference Between Short and Long Block... (Mean Green 2000)
I believe that traditionally a 'short block' was the bottom-end (block, pistons, crankshaft, connecting rods, oil pan, etc.) and the 'long block' was the short-block with heads, intake manifold, etc. I think there's an 'engine assembly' from GM for the Corvette that is a compete motor (long block with water pump, fuel intake system, computer, etc.) -- but I might be incorrect...
I would go with the short block if I could get away with it, but I don't know what your situation calls for.
Re: Difference Between Short and Long Block... (dmcantrell)
Short Block is the complete bottom end of the engine. This includes the rotating assembly (crankshaft, pistons, rods), block, and depending on vendor, a camshaft. The Long Block includes all of this PLUS heads.
Make sure you are comparing apples to apples when comparing short/long blocks of one engine builder to anohter as sometimes the parts included varies.
With LS1s, usually all Long/Short blocks are assuming you are giving your engine as a core which they would use the oil pan, front/rear covers, intake manifold, tbody, etc, on your new long/short block.
So which one should you go with.. Definitely a LONG block if you are looking for a complete motor. A shortblock isnt much without heads!

Just one of the possablities but I'm looking at cars right at 30k and using the rest on some kinda power adder :D
I've always loved the thought of an LPE TT setup and then again, a 427 would be awesome as well....and I'd like to have some left over for the appearance mods, etc :D
