My 99' six-speed has all the bolt-on mods available; headers, LS-6 intake, throttle body, etc...but only has the Hypertech to supply any engine tuning. Would it be worth it to have this car dyno tuned to gain more horsepower or driveabilty? The Vette Doctors are running a great dyno tuning special for just $299. Thanx.
With headers and cold air a couple of friends of mine have picked up around 10 rwhp with tuning. I'm sure it could vary depending on the car and the tuner.
Besides the HP/Tq gains to be had with a good tuner, your car will be running much safer due to the correct A/F mixture adjusted at WOT. This will prevent the car from running too lean and lessen any KR.
Proper tuning of your car espeically if you have significant modifications should be considered mandatory...
And maybe no - depending on your car. When I hosted a Club Dyno Day on a wide-band dyno we had 11 C5's dyno. This was an eye opener. My 99 MN6 with LS6 lid, K&N air filter and Corsa Indy's dyno's in at 292 RWHP. I was horrified. Thought I didn't do the pull right (we drove our own cars). Untill I saw the print out. My AFR's fell to 10.0:1 right at 5900 RPM's. From 5200 to 5900 they were around 11.0:1. The bottom line my car was running RICH and I probably was down 15 HP. So an LS1 Edit would have helped me. Two other cars (both 01's) one with almost idnetical mods as mine and one 100% stock pulled 321 RWHP for the modded car and 312 for the 100% stock C5. The difference their AFR's were right on. In fact from about 4000 RPM neither car fell below 12.0:1 and both were for the most part right near 12.5:1. The lightly modded car was at 13.1:1 right at 5200 RPM's where he produced his 321 HP. That is just about perfect. I don't think LS1 Edit could do much for them. As a base line we had a lightly modded 01 Z06 and he dyno'd in at 335 so you can see how strong that one 01 LS1 was.
So before spending the $300 to $500 for an LS1 Edit dyno tune I'd spend $50 and get a wide-band pull just to see what's happening with your car.
It is definately worth it! Carmen has tuned hundreds of cars and can work wonders with LS1 Edit. With the mods you have made, you have affected the air fuel balance of the engine and can benefit from a good tuning. Also, with the special he has running it is almost half the price.
