Crossover pipes - do they reduce interior resonance
Have had a custom exhaust system fitted to my 97 C5 in UK. System involves replacement of rear mufflers with two small in-line mufflers similar to Borla Stinger. Sounds great at idle and at high revs when stationary but under hard acceleration on the road the noise in the car is loud - very loud. Should I consider a crossover pipe to reduce interior resonance or just buy a better stereo.
Re: Crossover pipes - do they reduce interior resonance (UK C5 Owner)
I was wondering the same thing as I just installed a Borla XR1 and although it sounds great through most of the rpm band I have bad resonance right at 2K. I was thinking of doing the FRC partition in mine if I couldn't fix it with a X-Pipe.
Re: Crossover pipes - do they reduce interior resonance (Trey395)
I believe the crossover will only help smooth out exhaust burble under deacceleration. Guys on the forum claim the GHL system is as loud as the Stingers but with no interior renosance.
Re: Crossover pipes - do they reduce interior resonance (UK C5 Owner)
You could try an x-pipe. They're $150 to $250 plus installation.
I've heard that is reduces volume, but not necessarily resonance.
Personally - I would pull the home-grown exhaust off and install a designed system that you know has no resonance. Corsa's and GHL's guarantee it, Borla's are pretty good for the money.

I'll give you a ride in my C5 after the Pro LGM/Borla LT Header system
(w/3" Xpipe & w/o cats) has been installed. I think you agreed with me that my C5 at present w/stock cats & Borla Stinger Quad Tips has no interior resonance, not like others have complained about on this forum.
Re: Crossover pipes - do they reduce interior resonance (PewterC5)
No x-pipe then, it will have to be the stereo. I noticed the 'if its too loud, you're too old' statement in an earlier post. Probably time to buy a sensible car!
I have a 99 coupe with a first generation borla system that resonates in 6th gear at 1200-1500 rpm.
Well.... Last weekend I added the insulation to the rear of the car, and the difference is night and day. Best $45 I've ever spent!!
I may go back and do the seat tubs later, but I have accomplished what I needed to do with just insulating the back. A friend who has a 99FRC helped me, and I'm sure
we will be doing his car in the next week or so.
Tips: Wear gloves, Have a sharp razor knife and Don't be too pickey about covering every spot... It all gets covered up when you finish, and a few gaps won't make a difference.
Re: Crossover pipes - do they reduce interior resonance (UK C5 Owner)
An FRC is a Fixed Roof Coupe. Originally this was just the Hardtop version of the C5 but also includes the Z06 variant nowadays. The partition is an aftermarket piece that fills in the gap under the back window and makes the luggage area into a separate compartment. My guess is that you've got a Coupe like mine so you won't be able to seal the gap and will have to find an alternative way of suppresing the noise.
From what I've seen here only the stock and the Corsa exhaust systems truly don't resonate at all. 'fraid it means importing one yourself. Still at least you have some good roads to drive on up there ! The CCCUK only seems to have a Southern Scotland branch which meets in the Glasgow/Edinburgh area. Re: Crossover pipes - do they reduce interior resonance (UK C5 Owner)
Can't say what a crossover would (or wouldn't) do for an aftermarket system.
However, on my stock system, I had to add an x-pipe (from Andy at A&A) to get my tips straight (long story). I noticed that the burble on deceleration was completely gone (something I personally liked) and the interior noise at cruising speeds (~15-1700 rpm) was reduced noticeably.
Can't say my experience would match yours, but I was satisfied.
Re: Crossover pipes - do they reduce interior resonance (VetteDrmr)
I have an X pipe and I still have horrible resonance from 25K to 35K. I installed 4 tip stingers on Monday and its been rainy so I couldn't drive much until tonight. Now my brain is numb....I can't answer your original question about a reduction from the crossover pipe, but I can definitely attest that it does not eliminate resonance.
I'm still a bit crosseyed and stupid from being in the car...but I'm thinking my install must not be proper. I'm going to loosen everything up and re-adjust...if that doesn't fix it you can look for my post in the for sale section.
Re: Crossover pipes - do they reduce interior resonance (UK C5 Owner)
Did anyone besides me install an H pipe in front of the cats? I have the XR-1. Way back in 1998 it was considered the thing to do to cut down on resonance. :smash:
Re: Crossover pipes - do they reduce interior resonance (te51cle)
I am dumb - have seen these partitions in Ecklers catalogue. Yes, my car is a coupe so the partition won't do it. Like the insulating foam idea so will try that before embarking on anything more drastic. Thanks for your help.
