My check engine light came on and the only current code was P1416. I found something that mentions AIR system, but I don't know what that is. Can anyone help? Everytime I take it to my mechanic he charges $60 to diagnose and then fixes it.
Also, I had a wiper problem, that was solved by my pals here on the forum, but they won't go down to their original set position. If I manually reset, will I mess anything up?
The secondary air injection (AIR) pump system is designed to lower emissions after a start-up. The AIR pump is timed to remain on for about one minute after the engine is started. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controls the AIR pump system by sending signals to the system's components. The PCM also monitors the heated oxygen sensors (HO2S) and the short term fuel trim in order to assess system performance.
When the HO2S voltage or the short term fuel trim do not meet the system parameters, the PCM sets the P1416 code.
If the problem is intermittent then it is most likely poor wiring connections, crimped wire, etc. The link below addresses a problem with the 1997 wiring harness routing FYI. How long does it take your mechanic to "fix" the problem? When you clear the code how long does it take to reappear?
Thanks for the info. This code has appeared 2 times I think. I need an oil change so I'll ask my mechanic to check into this. My car was built in May, so it may have the correction mentioned in the action center notice. The car runs fine. We went to a convention last week and ran drags and autocross, in 100 degree weather - maybe that set it off, although the code showed up after we got home. These cars are just getting too complicated, but the forum really comes through!

first thing you have to check make sure that your drains hoses are not clogged on the left side by the wiper arm where the motor is there is 3 drain hoses there. must time the problems with wiper are those hoses get clogged and water sit there for long time, the wiper motor is seal for water resistance but it water sits there for long time it will go inside causing short or wipers come alive by themself they seem to do what ever they want. if this is your case you must take that motor apart and make sure that you dry it inside with a hair dryer or let it set in the sun, make sure you have some RTV "silicone" to reseal also buy some electric contact cleaner from radio shack.
if you wipers seem to be off by alighment try this,
turn on your wipers then turn them off at the same time watch the wipers to see if the make one last movement when they go down should be slow movement like to set down. if this happen that means the aligment is off, to fixed is easy, just after you turn you wipers off and move for the last time just take wiper arms off and reset them down by the wipers bed and tight the nut on the wipers arms back up. you should be good. if not do it again until they are resting on the wipers bed stop. GL
Yeah, I got the wiper motor dried, I think so I'll try the second solution. I'd rather not take apart the motor and even though I have extended warranty, it's a $250 ded and I'd rather not mess with the dealer anyway.
I had the same problem on my 98 TA took me 15 minutes to fix the problem.
If you are unsure its the AIR valve just remove it and see if you can blow air thru it. If not just pick one up at the dealer I think it was $36.
real easy fix.
At first the code will come and go then it will not go away.
I had this code pop up on my 1997. While inspecting that area of the engine, I noticed that the rearmost exhaust manifold bolt (one of the bolts holding the exahust manifold to the head) was so loose it was almost falling out. I tightened it, erased the code, and in the year that I had the car after that, the code never showed up again.
It sounds strange, but several other forum members report the same thing. It's an easy and free thing to check before spending any money trying to replace parts.
