Massive problem due to leaking battery issue, HELP!
Should've come to this site before buying my 1997 C5! Bought her used and was unaware of the problem. Now it's doing all the crazy electronic stuff that I've seen posted here previously. The car drives and runs great, except for the odd gauge flicker, which I'm getting used to. Now the check engine light is on and, of course, it's time for a smog check. The dealer states he can't do anything about it except for completely replacing the harness and whatever else was damaged. Repair is quoted at 6K.
There must be other's here who have had it happen and I'd like to hear your experiences and what you did to solve it. I'll be taking it to West Coast Corvette next week to see if they can bring something to the table that a dealer may not be able to.
Any insight or advice would be appreciated. :cry :banghead: :cry

$6K
That appears to be very high. Might want to check with some forum vendors for a PCM used and possible the harness. Sorry to hear of your problems, but apparently (and unfortunately) it is all too common. Also, one of the recent issues of either Corvette Fever or Vette had an article on this very subject and what was required to repair.

Thanks for the advice. I love the car and I'm bent on getting it fixed, but I thought their quote was a bit high too. I'll be checking the pubs you mentioned for additional info.

If the car runs fine maybe your PCM is ok, (we'll hope for the best) one of the biggest problems is damage to the wiring harness under the battery box.
Remove the access cover in the rt. frt. wheel well to get to the PCM. Remove the battery, protect the PCM from water and thoroughly clean up the mess with baking soda and water. Check the wiring harness for damage, you probably have wires eaten in two by the acid. Also note there are a/c vacuum lines in this area the acid has been know to harm them as well. If you find the damage to wiring and vacuum lines and get it repaired you may get lucky and get out without too much expense. I'm experienced in this type of repair work and can tell you the major expense is labor. It can be extremely time consuming. This post may be of interest. Do a lot of searching it may help you fix it. http://www.c5forum.com/cgi-bin/ultim...c;f=1;t=000811
Good luck

Thanks for the info Bugster57; very informative post you sent me to. I'll be doing plenty of research as well as opening up the car to see what I'm truly dealing with.
I see my example is getting around on another topic. Hopefully I'll have a positive post to throw around after this.
