Default Help with Homelink install...

I posted this in C5 General, but haven't gotten a response. I'm hoping this will fall under the "tech" portion of tech/performance.

Okay, well, I'm working on installing a homelink modual thta I got off of ebay and so far I have:
Removed drivers side mirror from car
Unstitched stitching around visor
Cutout portion of cardboard where homelink modual will go
[edit] and I have the first coat of primer on the "gray" homelink cover (going to paint it black)

Look ahead to the actual wireing of the homelink unit, I'm not feeling to confident. I've looked at a few of the "how to's" here on the forum such as this one: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=515166
but am still not exactly sure how to wire it up. Can anyone give me more specific instructions with regards to the actual splicing and wireing of the unit?

Maybe it will help if I post a pit of what I'm looking at.....

Thank you!!

Hi NoleC5,
The best suggestion I have is to take a test light to the electrical connector that the visor was attached to in your car. Make note of how the male and female parts and their respective positive 12v and grounds are relitive to color of the wires. Chevrolet switched colors for ground and +12v depending upon year of the car you have. I used the red and white wires comming out of the plastic sheath. These are the wires that were different ( red was positive on one visor, and ground on another cars visor) . Once you have identified the +12v and ground wires in the visor splice the according wires to your home link unit's wires. My homelink unit had black for ground and red for the +12V. :D Do your self a favor and check if everything is functioning well, and the finding an auto upolstry shop to stitch it back up for you. I learned the hard way.

Thank you for the reply. So it looks like before I go any further, I should get a "test light"? I think the only place open now is going to be Wal Mart, do you think I would be able to pick up a test light there?

They should have one there, don't puncture through wire though just test the pins on the male connector making note on where the locating tab is and the color of the wire on the female side.

Okay, so lets say for argument sake that the red wire in the car is the "hot" wire. If thats the case, do I cut the red wire on the visor and splice the ends of the two red wires coming from the homelink to the two ends of the wire from the visor?

That's where it gets confusing. Because it's in the visor that GM was not consistant with the color coding of the wires. By locating the positive wire on the male end of the connector and how it locates in the female connector, it will give you the color of the positive wire in the visor itself. If you have any doubts or you want to be really sure, you can always connect the visor back to it's source and then test the red and white wires (the ones at the 11:00 position on your photograph). I cut these wires and then spliced and soldered them back together, and then shrink wrapped to reinsulate. I did not object to cutting them for testing. From what I was able to test out with mine was that the wire on the visor side connector, that is on the same side as the locating tab, is the ground. I took a couple of digital photographs to show you what I'm talking about. If you think it will help you out I can Email them to you

Hello NoleC5,

If it helps -- each Homelink unit is different, but for the unit in your picture, the orange wire is " + ".

The wiring isn't that big of deal. If you don't have a test light: temporarily splice the Homelink wires in, and then before sewing it back up, plug the visor wiring plug back into the car. Place the rubber button assembly temporarily back into the homelink unit, and press any of the Homelink buttons. If the light on the Homelink lights up, the wiring is fine. If there is no light, you've got the wires reversed. (If the wiring is reversed, don't leave the visor plugged in any longer than necessary).

Don't trust the vanity mirror lights, as they will work either way. If the vanity lights don't work, you've got a bad splice in the visor, or you have a blown fuse (ask me how I know! :) )

As far as connecting the wires in the visor, I used "Telephone Wire Splice Connectors" from Radio Shack. The are small, round clear plastic connectors with a red button on top that is pressed down to make the connection (see pict below). They connect three small wires, are very flat, and are quick and easy to use. I had to strip a little insulation from the ends of the slightly-too-large Homelink wires to make it fit, but it worked fine.

Part number #64-3080

Good luck!
Kent

Saving41 and Kent1999 - thank you very much for the pics and info. I actually stopped by Walmart today and picked up a 6 and 12 V Circuit Tester and a packet of 3M quick connect wire connectors. I think at this point, I only have one more question: I know that I'm supposed to hook the three "red or hot" wires together with the wire connectors but do I also connect the ground/white wires in this same way with the wire connectors?

Thanks again for all your help.

Yes. You must connect each wire from the Homelink to the correct visor wire.

Connect the Homelink's "+" (positive) to the visor's "+" (hot) and the other Homelink wire to the visor's "-" (ground).

Using your circuit tester on the plug that is coming out of the mounting hole for your visor will tell you which is which.

If you ground the Negative meter lead to the chassis or go direct to negative on the battery and check each wire that will surely give you the positive wire.

Well, I think I need to figure out which fuse I blew first, but the book doesn't state which fuse is for the vanity mirrors and rear view mirror......unless I'm missing it.

The "old" way is to take the meter and ground one end. Then hit each side of each fuse (the ends have exposed metal) and the bad one will not have the "juice" on the one end.
The owners manual for my 2003 has the list of fuses and # in it!
This should let you narrow them down.
Don't know about yours.
Wish I could help more.

It turns out I blew number 7 and number 2 I think. In the manual, its doesn't clearly state what number 2 controled. But my wife go lucky and just pulled number 2 on the second try, it was blown.

I actually wired everything up to the visor last night (after the fuse debockle) and plugged it back into the vette and everything worked like a charm (vanity mirror lights and home link modual). Hopefully tonight I will be able to post some pics of the wiring.

All I have left to do is finish painting the plastic cover piece and put a few holes in the visor for the buttons.

I can't thank everyone enough for all the help I've received on this project!! Next time I get the bright idea to do a mod, I'll do it at a mod party where there is plenty of help!
