went to the superchips web site and they claim a 32 Hp gain for 99-03 ls1's once you use their tuner to reprogram your computer. Not bad for 300 bucks if its true. anyone have any experience with this tuner. Can 32 hp gain be accurate? is his possible. Thanks
I am a dealer for Superchips. We use them mostly for diesel trucks. That's where you can really get some HP and torque gains. We use them on all of ours and they really help pulling heavy loads. Otherwise, most cars don't see that much.
They told me that they were getting around 30 hp gains on average. I have a Z06 and decided to try it, what the heck. If you haven't used their tuners, they are very easy to use. Anyway, I got one. I didn't dyno it, but I was surprised at how much difference it did make. It was definitely an extra kick in the backside.
However, my Z06 is at 21st CMC getting a sc, cam and a few other goodies right now. I think that will be a little more kick than the Superchips tuner anyhow. :)
My main business isn't in dealing with automotive stuff and therefore I'm not a sponsor on the forum. I could beat the price quoted above, but I don't think I'm allowed to offer such or that it would be right to do that. There seems to be some great vendors associated with the forum. Best to leave well enough alone. :)
Maybe I'll leave the tuner with John and if he has any interest he can put it on a bone stock C5 and/or Z06 and let y'all know. I'd be willing to bet he is too busy to mess with it though.
I have opinions on this matter based on personal experience with a 2001 Tahoe, and some very well thought out opinions, along with my two years of reading this forum every day. My answer is you would be lucky to get 3 rwhp. The guy above with the Z06 - please don't take this personally, but I just don't believe you picked up enough to feel.
I have seen Z06's with headers, high flow cats and cold air intake pick up 10 rwhp with custom tuning on the dyno by MTI - one of the top Chevy tuners in the world. (that's 10 rwhp for the tuning, not the headers etc).
32 HP gain on an stock LS1 with any chip or custom tuning is absolute BS. Sounds the Enron accounting folks have been rehired as Performance Tuning Analysts. <smile> I spoke with two local performance shops that specialize in the LS1 and both said that you might see a 4 to 7 rwhp gain with the LS1 Edit on a stock LS1. The LS1 Edit runs $500.00.

I am pretty happy if I get 10 rwhp from an LS1Edit custom tune on a stock car. Here in California, we can't generally add timing, which is pretty aggressive from the factory. We do lean out the overly rich PE, however.
That alone will typically gain 6-10 rwhp. But I have seen enough differences car to car that I would never expect some mail order gizmo to do that on every stock car (I mean the base 10 rwhp gain).
In fact in every instance I have read a Hypertech tune from a pcm, I find out the only changes are to fan temps. And they make outlandish claims based on that.
I made 5 passes w/ hypertech PP3 installed, and I ran a tenth slower than my previous best. I returned to stock and went back to the track the following week. I got the tenth I lost back. I ended up just using the fan settings and raised the rev limiter. I think the best programmer out so far is the predator. I would definately spend the money on a dyno tune instead of a programmer. The more I read, the more it seems the way to go. SCOTT
I have a 99 Vette and I installed Superchips about 2 yrs. ago.I will say,I felt a slight increase BUT no 32 HP gain. I wish Idid, but no such luck. :chevy :chevy :flag :chevy :chevy

Then why bother doing it at all? I mean, if you're gonna mod (not you specifically dfwroadkill) for more HP, why the heck don't you do a before and after to determine whether or not it's real HP? We get plenty of bogus crap from manufacturers/magazines, so it's nice to get real numbers from forum members. :skep: to the SOTP dynamometer.

I lost 2 PCM's and 2 rwhp and 2 rwtq using superchips. Not to mention my car was at the shop for 3 weeks.
Now I didn't pay for anything but the superchips programmer, but I now have a custom tune by ECS. Gave up on superchips.
Superchips sent me back a reply about dyno numbers to support their hp gains. attched is what they sent minus the graph(too big) according to them they are getting 32hp extra at 6000 rpm and averaging about 18hp throughout the power band. just to clarify, these results are not from replacing the stock chip but from using their tuner. Interesting, but no one seems to belive it, and I'm a novice so my opinion does not count
