yesterday in the span of about a 1/2 hour drive the auto climate control panel went out along with the a/c itself, time out is about 10 seconds and then it comes back on. all other electronix are working, but the ac stops and i look at the climate control and push the buttons, but no display or button lites, then it comes back on.
today it happened again once in about a 1/2 hour drive
anyone have the experience or any ideas whats going on
any insight would be appreciated
Re: 97 auto ac climate control intermittent failure (c5&r1 4fun)
It sounds like what happened to me a while back. I opened the fuse box on the passenger floorboard and pulled the fuse and cleaned it's contacts. I think it was #18, works fine now.
Re: 97 auto ac climate control intermittent failure (c5&r1 4fun)
well i tried inspecting the fuse #18 in the passenger well
it looked ok but i switched it out anyway
drove about 1 hour today and it went out twice about 15 -20 seconds each time.
anyone out there have any other suggestions
Re: 97 auto ac climate control intermittent failure (c5&r1 4fun)
I do not have the dual AC, just the standard controls setup and I have the same problem. Doesn't happen regularly, but it has happened enough to notice (obviously).....
If anyone has a clue what could be causing this I would be interested as well...
Re: 97 auto ac climate control intermittent failure (c5&r1 4fun)
I also found that after taking the console out and removing the head unit and taking that apart, that Coca-Cola had found it's way onto the electronics board of the ac/heater unit and shortened it out. I cleaned it off with WD-40 and a tooth brush. The console is easy to remove, along with trim around the radio/ac unit. There are only about 4-bolts and 3-4 screws in the dash, and just undo alittle wiring. I did this along with cleaning the #18 fuse so it was one or the other. So, have you ever spewed a Coke in the Vette?   :lolg: :smash:
Re: 97 auto ac climate control intermittent failure (ScreaminDemon)
cant say i have.....
spewed i mean
but i only got the car last year
so who knows where its been or what its really been up to
kind of like some of the girls ive dated i guess
you just never know
i guess i can try that next
dont know why it would start happening all of a sudden tho
this is a long shot but i just had the right fog lite replaced by a shop
could they have done anything that would affect the ac?
Re: 97 auto ac climate control intermittent failure (c5&r1 4fun)
I doubt that at all. Also, as C5-tech has stated to me several times on here, he has had several problems with customers ac units acting similar due to the pin connector on the back of the heater/ac unit becoming corroded and just needing to be cleaned and coated with a resistant lubricant.
Re: 97 auto ac climate control intermittent failure (c5&r1 4fun)
You are about to have a total control head failure. The only known cure is to replace the control head. Big bucks too around $400.00. I have replaced several of them for the same problem.
Re: 97 auto ac climate control intermittent failure (irfgt)
if thats the case that sucks
is the $400 for dealer parts / repair complete
or is that just parts and self repair
and if so is it difficult to do yourself
any added insight appreciated
Re: 97 auto ac climate control intermittent failure (c5&r1 4fun)
The pin connector is plugged into the back of the AC/heater head unit. There are 2 screws that hold the unit to the dash, and 2 screws that hold the unit together. It's only about 3 inches thick and holds a simple electronics board inside it. Easy to look for faulty solders and shorts or debris, but your pin connector is probably just corroded. I can run you through the easy breakdown if you want to take the console apart. If you need the instructions, just IM me or I'm sure you can just find it on here. It won't take 10 minutes to take it apart, and think of the $$ you'll save!!!!!!!!! :seeya
Re: 97 auto ac climate control intermittent failure (ScreaminDemon)
thanks i'll definitely give it a try before taking it in spending $400
and yes i could use some brief pointers on dash removal etc. as i'm pretty clueless
maybe u could email me at emerywong@aol.com
thanx
Re: 97 auto ac climate control intermittent failure (c5&r1 4fun)
I would be interested in trying this out, if you could post the procedure I would appreciate it. I think I can handle taking the console out and cleaning the contact. It is worth a try before having to take it to the dealership....
Re: 97 auto ac climate control intermittent failure (c5&r1 4fun)
Sorry so late, I'm not online during the day. If I leave something out I'm sure someone will correct me. You need a 1/4" socket set, star wrenches and small flathead screwdriver to remove center console. Take off shift ball, open console and pop off the 2 bolt covers at the rear with screwdriver and take bolts out. The traction control cover pops off 'gently' with screwdriver, (I did not disconnect any wiring here, just set it all to the side) Undo 2 bolts below. Pull out ashtray and undo screw (starhead). Pop off the buzzer cover that is beside the ignition with screwdriver (gently) to get to star screw there. There's another star screw somewhere that I've forgotten, it is probably obvious, just move console around abit. I cut the wires to lighter in center compartment then used connectors to reconnect, one is copper so no mixup. Lighter in dash has a plug in the back. Center 'glove box' you should be able to lift and place backward alittle. Shifter and dash piece you can finness off and to the side (you will have to move shifter and brake up/down), just enough to clear the way. Now remove 2 bolts holding ac unit, pull it out and remove pin connector on back (careful here, easy to break a pin). Clean and coat it with GM eclectic(sp) grease. You can remove 2 screws and open AC unit and check for shorts in the board, grit, etc. That's it, I may have left out a step, but if you can turn a screwdriver this is easy. You may need to clear any codes after reinstallation.
