Default Clutch Advice

A friend of mine has a 98 and he needs a new clutch. What is the going rate for a new clutch and what is a good price for an install? I just want to make sure he doesn't get ripped off. Thanks

What kind of clutch are you looking at, stock or hot rod?

The z06 clutch setup, which consists of flywheel, pressure plate and friction disc is about 375.
While you're in there, it's best to replace the pilot bearing ~$10 and the slave cylinder which is about $70.

I think the labor rate is 8 hours. Might be 10, I can't remember.

In the end, it's about $450 in parts and the rest in labor, depending on the shop.

$1000 to 1200 is about right.

Best of luck....

I'm looking for a stock replacement or a z06 clutch. How much difference is there? I saw one for 350 in the CF Mall. So I'm looking at 8 hours labor?

It depends on what you do with the car. If you're a drag racer type(which I'm not) you'll probably melt through the Z06 clutch especially if you use slicks or DR.
If all you see is the street or an occasional road course, the Z06 clutch is probably what you want. The pressure plate is a little stiffer than the stock vette one.

I think the book says 8 hours for labor, but it might be 10. Most of that depends on the shop. Go to the dealer and expect to be charged that. Go to an independent and they sometimes cut you a deal.
Kind of depends on the quality of shops in your area, and their experience with C5 corvette clutches/transmission work.

It's not overly difficult to do, but there are steps that independant shops often miss because they are reluctant(or don't have access to) to reference the service manual. Dealerships are guilty of this as well, but in their defense, at least they HAVE the service manuals.

Best thing I can recommend is to find an independant with C5 experience.
Good luck.....

I would go with the 02/03 Z06 Clutch, I run 11.80's with my Hardtop and I have a customer in MD running in the 10's with the same clutch and we both run MT ET Street darg tires.
It works good and it's cheap.
Good luck.
