After reading all the posts regarding the high probability of battery leakage I decided to look at it a week ago. Couldn't see anything.
Well I ordered an Optima through the wholesaler that supplies us with deep cycle batteries (I'm an RV/Boat dealer).
Tonight when I was removing the old battery (after getting the stripped bolt heads finally off) low and behold what did I find? It was starting to leak around the joint near the positive terminal.

I'm happy to hear that you were able to benefit by preemptively swapping out your stock battery. I changed mine last week for the Optima Redtop. This is a great example of how sharing knowledge helps all of us.

The wiring harness, the vacuum lines that control the AC, and last, but not least, the PCM (computer). Was a member posted an estimate for $6000 in dealer repairs just this past week asking if it was too high and another member posted that he'd recently paid $4000 to fix his. Hope you did the baking soda/water washdown under the old battery just in case!! If not, I would recommend it so you're sure to find out if acid has leaked and where. If enough has leaked, you need to get underneath the tray from within the wheelwell and clean it out really well. Search for battery problems in recent and archive and you'll get the whole scoop.
Re: Another battery . . . another leak . . . (Max Power)
Just a wee bit of white crusties on the joint between the top and bottom of the battery near the positive terminal. No actual fluid leakage down the side at all.
I am friends with the Chevy dealer's son where the car was bought so I gave him a call before I dropped off the battery today. Seems the GM service rep was in today on a dealer visit. They didn't say much but there aren't too many Vettes sold around here.
It remains to be seen what, if anything, I'll receive in warranty (finished Aug. 2003). All I told them I wanted was credit towards an oil change. I don't think that was asking too much.
All I can say is Thank you to you guys and thank you to technology. 10 years ago I would have been screwed.
