Default Service Column Lock

The title pretty much sums this one up.

Got in the car for my usual afternoon spin when "Service Column Lock" appeared on my DIC and of course the steering wheel won't budge.

I thought I remembered seeing posts for mods to bypass the column lock. Would this solve my problem or is it too late for that?

I saw there is some recall for this problem but since mine is '97 I'm not holding out hope.

Thanks guys

Welcome to the Forum. :)

Take a look at the Dealer Service Bulletin 01-02-35-008 blow concerning column lock. Common failure.

Whack the top of the wheel firmly as you turn the ignition. It sounds ghetto, but it has got me running all 3 times i've had it, as well as the other 5 or so times I've had it on other GM cars. IT WILL WORK.

Even if your car qualified, the "recall" ended 7/1/03. Buy the CLB and you'll be set... :yesnod:

Thanks for all the suggestions. The CLB seems to be the way to go.

I saw a picture of it and noticed the cigarette lighter adapter- is this always installed or just when the wheel locks?

I tried disconnecting the battery. I may have left it disconnected too long (dropped a wrench into the unknown) Now my remote keyless entry won't work :mad

Connection at battery are tight and nothing else seems to be malfunctioning. This junior member is in need of assistance

Grab the steering wheel with your left hand. Grab the key with your right hand. Turn the wheel hard left then hard right while cycling the key on and off at the same time. Should free up in about 5 seconds.

The CLB is the way to go, unless you want to use the above procedure. The CLB is completely hidden under your dash once installed. The cigarette light thing is to cycle the locking mechanism open......... however you can do the same thing by just turning on the ignition to the car.

Just had mine fixed yesterday, at dealership cost: $566.00. Tech said the problem should not return. Is this a true statement? Did not find out about the bypass until last night, after I already paid that ridiculous sum of money. :mad

I appreciate all the input. I've jerked and tugged, smacked and whacked. This stupid wheel just won't unlock.

I'm going to try pulling some of the covers to see if there is anything I can get to mechanically, if not it's to those wonderful experts at the dealership

In an effort to save money I'm just going to have them unstick the damn thing and then install the CLB

Thanks to everyone again, you guys make owning a C5 a lot easier on us new guys

Do it AS you turn the ignition on.

You guys kept saying it would work and it finally did :hurray:

I guess I just jerked it harder this time but it came unstuck and with my CLB on order this problem should be solved.

Good luck to everyone, the Air Force is sending me to the desert so I'll have at least a few months without car headaches :flag

Thanks everyone
